The Infinity Puzzle: Quantum Field Theory and the Hunt for an Orderly Universe

Review

"Close chronicles the search for the elusive Higgs Boson particle (the 'God Particle').... Throughout, the author chronicles the winners and losers in the annual Nobel sweepstakes, giving them recognition for their achievements and providing a lively thread for readers."―Kirkus Reviews"The Infinity Puzzle is eminently readable. It has no equations--only a few Feynman diagrams--and a glossary in the back so you don't get your bosons confused with your hadrons.... All of the luminaries of twentieth century particle physics are here, along with many unsung heroes whose contributions Dr. Close explains and puts into context so they can be better appreciated by a public hitherto ignorant of their work.... [T]he entire book is a very manageable introduction to quantum physics for those who are interested in, but possibly intimidated by, understanding the inner workings of the fabric of our Universe."―Ars Technica"Building the standard model, the flagship theory of modern particle physics, was no mean task. It took decades of painstaking work to bring the forces and elementary particles that make up the universe together in a single framework (which still doesn't include gravity). Close, a theoretical physicist, chronicles this history from an insider's perspective.... the story doesn't unfold as a simple, clearly developing line of thought. Instead, the reader witnesses scientific progress in all its real-world messiness. It's a comedy of errors at times, full of dead ends, missed opportunities and ideas that lie dormant for years, unproven or unnoticed."―Science News"In his new book, Oxford physicist Frank Close reviews decades' worth of brain-teasing theories and looks ahead to puzzles yet to be solved.... Close's tale illustrates that the course of true science doesn't always run smooth. It may well turn out that the long-sought Higgs boson is a will-o'-the-wisp, and physicists will have to go back to square one. But even that won't render The Infinity Puzzle out of date."―Alan Boyle, MSNBC.com's Cosmic Log"As someone who can deftly explain abstruse quantum field theory to a lay reader, Frank Close is a rarity among physicists. Rarer still, he knows how to weave a compelling tale--that of the 'infinity problem,' which has bedeviled the field of quantum electrodynamics and subsequent attempts to unify the forces of nature. The result is a great scientific whodunit, replete with a large, engaging cast of characters, behind-the-scenes maneuvering, and unexpected twists and turns. Here is proof that Close belongs among the very first rank of scientist-authors. I strongly recommend The Infinity Puzzle."―Steve Nadis, coauthor of The Shape of Inner Space"It is a pleasure to read a book on recent advances in our understanding of the structure of matter by an author who not only understands the subject but also takes care to investigate conflicting accounts of how these advances came about."―Peter Higgs, emeritus professor of physics, The University of Edinburgh"Superb.... The Infinity Puzzle presents in light and fetching prose a (and you should pardon the pun) close-up of a wonderful set of episodes in contemporary science centered around one of the single most beautiful edifices of modern theoretical physics, quantum field theory, and leading up to the hottest example of big science to be found on the globe today."―MAA Reviews"Mr Close, an accomplished particle physicist in his own right, enjoyed unprecedented access to all the principal players, many of whom he either knows well or, like Mr Higgs, has spoken to at length. He also appears to have left no relevant academic paper, no conference proceedings, memoir or other publicly available source unturned. This painstaking attention to historical detail yields many gems.... Mr Close's magisterial work is sure to become the definitive account of the story. It offers no unambiguous advice to the Nobel committee. But the judges would be wise to give it a thorough read anyway."―Economist"[A] thoroughly researched and well-crafted narrative.... [Close] focuses on the triumphs and failures of the physicists behind the equations, providing a realistic view of how theoretical physics really progresses--the all-too-human endeavour fraught with personal ambitions, rivalries, alliances, errors and plain historical accident.... It's refreshing to read a popular physics book that doesn't revisit the same well-trodden ground of so many before it."―New Scientist

The theory of quantum electrodynamics (QED) which describes the interaction of light and matter is the most accurate theory in all of science, providing almost unbelievably accurate agreement with experiment. Yet in the middle of the twentieth century the theory was in a deep crisis. Calculations of even the simplest of events in the subatomic world, like the absorption and emission of a photon by an electron, seemed to give nonsensical infinite results that flew in the face of finite values from experiment. These infinities dotted the landscape of physics like ugly tumors, leading some to believe that physics was fundamentally on the wrong track. But hope was at hand. It took a whole post-war breed of brilliant young scientists to invent an ingenious set of tricks collectively called "renormalization" to get rid of these infinities and restore the theory to a complete form. Renormalization not only axed the infinities in QED but became the test that any fundamental theory of physics had to pass before being deemed acceptable. In a stunning set of successes, it was applied to the unification of the weak and electromagnetic forces and then to the strong force holding protons and neutrons together. In this book Frank Close tells us how all this happened.Close's book is not only a clear description of renormalization but is also probably the most detailed popular history of post-war particle physics that I have read. Close starts with QED and how its brilliant expositors like Julian Schwinger and Richard Feynman developed renormalization techniques to exorcise its infinities. After this, the major part of the book deals with comprehensively describing one of the great triumphs of modern physics - the unification of the weak and electromagnetic forces by Sheldon Glashow, Steven Weinberg and Abdus Salam. This theory had to be again shown to be renormalizable, a momentous feat that was achieved by Dutch physicists Gerard 't Hooft and Martin Veltman. Along the way we are also treated to a fast-paced account of developments leading to the conjecture of the Higgs boson which was originally proposed to explain the difference in masses between the carriers of the electroweak force (the massive Z and W bosons) and the electromagnetic force (the massless photon). And finally Close describes one of the last pieces of the subatomic puzzle, the unraveling of the strong force inside atomic nuclei and the structure of protons and neutrons. These developments capping the understanding of the strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions paved the way to the creation of the Standard Model of particle physics, the crowning glory of physics that encompasses all known particles and forces except gravity and predicts the Higgs boson. However, the most fascinating aspect of Close's book in my opinion is not the lucid description of these technical details but the way it sheds light on both the nature of discovery and most importantly, the human side of science. As Close himself says, science as it appears to the public seems to consist of a few heroes marching resolutely on a linear trajectory to the truth. But as he marvelously documents, the truth is very different and way more messy and non-linear. Science is as much an unpredictable human drama as an exploration of nature's secrets. In every part of the story we see fallible human beings with all their ambitions, prejudices and flaws. There are lots of cases where scientists give up promising leads because of unfavorable remarks or neglect by others and have their discoveries scooped up later by fellow scientists who then win a Nobel Prize. We also read about the Nobel Laureate P. W. Anderson using insights from a very different field (superconductivity) to make key contributions to the ideas leading to the Higgs. Then there are little-known brilliant scientists like J. C. Ward and Ronald Shaw who have their fundamental ideas ignored because they are relatively unknown junior researchers who are lower in the hierarchy. Nobel Prizes are eagerly sought after, narrowly missed and even lobbied for. Sometimes one can see the almost eerie simultaneous germination of ideas in multiple minds, with some of them blossoming under the right circumstances and others fizzling out because of lack of interest or context. In many such cases, so many people end up contributing to a discovery in so many different ways that assigning credit becomes difficult or impossible. For instance, although Higgs's name is attached to the famous particle, it's clear that at least five others independently had the same ideas. Furthermore, in almost every case that Close documents, there are mutually conflicting accounts by scientists of the exact time, place and source leading to the conception of a key idea. Chance encounters and fortuitous attendances at the right scientific meetings seem to contribute to scientists' thought processes to a disproportionate extent. To his credit Close goes into considerable detail when describing all this and it's truly incredible to realize by reading his account how messy, haphazard and subject to sheer luck the actual process of scientific discovery is. Far from being the sure path to knowledge often depicted by the media, science resembles a zigzag, unpredictable climb over hills and valleys obscured by fog.Yet the beauty of it is that the truth, whatever it is, is surely out there, and an alert and intelligent mind can recognize it through hard-work, curiosity and mathematical prowess. The emphasis on the latter is especially clear in the book, and it's remarkable to realize the almost terrifying power of mathematics that allowed scientists to conjecture the existence of new fundamental particles of nature through sheer thought alone. In many cases it took fifteen or twenty years before these particles were actually found by experiment. The history of particle physics in this sense shows us what the human mind is capable of.As Close tells us in the end, these adventures are far from over. The last part of the book is dedicated to the equally heroic and imaginative experimental efforts devoted to verifying the predictions of the theorists, many of which gathered Nobel Prizes. As the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) spews out massive amounts of data, scientists are waiting with bated breath for the Higgs or its absence. Either way it would be a momentous event and would point to new, hitherto unexplored directions. Overall I would strongly recommend Close's book as one of the best accounts of both the post-war development of particle physics and of the idiosyncratic human side of science that I have read. The story is as epic as any great novel and packed with fascinating characters. Close tells it exceedingly well.

I'm not a scientist so my comments are those of a layman. I found Dr. Close's book to be well-written and worth reading. The book takes as its focus the development of quantum mechanics into quantum electrodynamics, quantum chromodynamics and, what I hadn't encountered before, quantum flavordynamics. The original mathematical models led to numerous infinities which the scientific community that developed these models sought to eliminate at least in part by a process called renormalization. In renormalization, experimental physicists told the theoretical physicists what the answer was and, from what I could tell, the theoretical physicists made the math fit the answer developed by the experimental physicists. Not surprisingly the theoretical physicists found this somewhat unsatisfying. The theoretical physicists struggled to make their theories and the supporting math fit the reality being uncovered by experiment. If you're interested in what these theories propose about physical reality, Dr. Close largely waits until the end of the book to consider some of the nature of our universe as suggested by current scientific understanding. The book really focuses on who received the Nobel prize or who didn't receive the Nobel prize and why this may have occurred. Dr. Close provides insight on the effect of ambition, ego, and personality in the pursuit of the highest prize in science. The book is worth reading for this alone. Feynman,Weinberg, Salam, Gell-Mann,Oppenheimer and others who dominated the development of the Standard Model and quantum mechanics largely from the middle to the end of the twentieth century find their place in the story. Others, less familiar or unfamiliar to me, t'Hooft, Higgs and Bjorken have their substantial contributions explained.

Regardless of what one might like to conclude from the enthusiastic reviews quoted on the dust cover, the layman will learn nothing useful about quantum field theory from this book since that is quite impossible. What one will find is a complete and engagingly told tale of some of the most important and exciting events in the history of physics, leading to what has become the most successful theory of modern times. The saga has all the qualities of a finely crafted suspense novel. Quantum field theory, at first thought to be an elegant and powerful generalisation of quantum mechanics, was soon found to be afflicted with such serious computational inconsistencies that, for a time, it quite fell out of favour. Only the work of the world's finest intellects brought its glorious resurrection.Prof. Close has exhaustively researched the topic, apparently consulting virtually every important paper, conference proceeding and even personal diaries, supported by interviews with every living scientist who took part in the drama. Although I am intimately familiar with the physics, I learned a great deal about its fascinating history and the personal interactions of the participants. What emerges is a very different view of grand science than that which is likely to be held by the novice. Instead of the logical, ordered and seamless progression from one great idea to the next, we find that advancements also involve missteps, misunderstandings and missed opportunities, often tainted with personal prejudice and haunted by the spectre of competition. In his carefully constructed account, Prof. Close communicates both the enormous thrill and crushing disappointments that typify advanced research.I found this book especially entertaining because I was present for the last few acts in the play, know all the participants and did my Ph.D. under one of them (Nobel laureate Abdus Salam). Of course, those not even peripherally involved will still find this book an educational and most enjoyable account of one of the most memorable and dynamic half centuries in the history of physics.

The Twilight Zone Companion

Amazon.com Review

The Twilight Zone Companion is one of the finest examinations of a television series. Author Marc Scott Zicree spent five years researching and writing what is without a doubt the definitive look at this classic horror-fantasy-science fiction show. (The series originally ran from 1959 to 1965, but is still seen in syndication around the world.) Not only is the book an exhaustive episode-by-episode guide, but the author apparently interviewed every living soul who was ever associated with the show. It's quite likely that creator Rod Serling, who died before the book saw publication in 1982, would have been suitably impressed by the respect and dedication that clearly went into this labor of love. Zicree later revised and expanded The Twilight Zone Companion for a second edition in 1989, and discusses both the briefly revived series and the feature film based on the show. --Stanley Wiater

One night many years ago, I had to get my, now adult, then 6 and 4 years old daughters to go to bed and call it a day.Of course, like any parent, I promised them that I'd read them a story. And they sort of bought that line, but they really would not settle down, and made it absolutely clear that they wanted to hear something different. So out of desperation, I grabbed this beloved book, which by then was a very faded falling apart yellowing non acid free paperback from near my desk in my home office and read them both a story in their shared bedroom. It was from this book and it was "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street."Their eyes lit up and they were totally captivated and they settled down. They had never experienced anything like that story and they loved it.And that night I heard "more daddy, more daddy!!!!"So then I read them "Time Enough To Last," followed by "Third From The Sun," and partway through "Third From The Sun" they were sound asleep. After that, the problem was not getting them to go to bed.The problem became, as they would without parental pleading, wash up, brush their teeth and scoot into bed and almost always chant..."read, read, read more Twilight Zone."Yes, very quickly, every night, they wanted more than one episode story from this book read to them. And they loved it.Then when they had sleepovers in our home with their friends, an event every parent dreads as the pack of kids will almost never settle down for the night, our house was different. We became famous in the "sleepover circuit" of my kids and their friends as to having really cool bedtime stories. So we never ever had a problem of getting a pack of sleepover kids to call it a night. To a kid, we were the cool parents who did not just read them bed time stories. We were the cool parents who read the kids stories from the "Twilight Zone," not the stories that every kid had heard from Fairy Tale Books. It got to the point where, in our small town, the parents of sleepover kids would call and ask if it was really true that we read out kids stories from the Twilight Zone.Occasionally, one of the moms would come over the day before to check out what she had heard from her kids, my kids pals. And over coffee my wife and one or more of the moms of sleepover kids would read a story together and pick out what stories were deemed appropriate for little Susie, Liz, Tonya, Morgan, and more.Well it worked, and now today, my adult kids are reading the plot summaries to their kids from this book, who, and I've seen them scramble off to bed instantly for the nightly reading of bedtime stories from "The Twilight Zone Companion."Try it, your kids will love the stories. In fact these stories got my kids totally interested in Science Fiction, so the "X-Files" and "Star Trek Voyager." became staples of my kids viewing.Note that the stores in this book, all from "the Twilight Zone," have now become children's middle school literature. In some of the English Class anthologies, "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street," is featured.Have fun and do take your sons and daughters to the "Twilight Zone," they will go to bed and then sleep without a fuss.

I can see from my Amazon history that I bought this book in 2008. I still searched the house to pull it out for the annual SyFy Twilight Zone Marathon. I love looking up the stories behind the episode. It is a little hard to find episodes in the book if you don't know the title or exactly which episode, but it is worth the hunt. I still enjoy using this book as a reference and very grateful to the author that he took the time to write it.

I purchased the series before i purchased the book. I am a person that likes to know facts about a particular movie or show. IMDB gives you only so much but this book gives you anything you want to know about this great series. From cast, locations, and any news about the directors, actors and little known facts about each episode. If you loved the show you enjoy this book.

This is a remarkable companion to the iconic landmark television series. It gives you everything you want to know, and then some - all the credits for each and every episode, story summaries, opening and closing commentary by the great Rod himself - and all presented in a logical, thorough, well researched format. Easy to use and fun to read - without even watching the show! Highly recommended to all Twilight fans out there.

This book is excellent. It has the plot line, cast and comments from every single episode of the series. It even tells you little secrets that you didn't know. If you are a Twilight Zone fan like I am, you will buy this book and add it to your collection. Very interesting and informative.

The book has some great information and I love the episode guide. But don't read about episodes you haven't seen as this book definitely contains spoilers. Also, I think the author is unnecessarily critical of some episodes in his analysis. Still, this is a must have for any avid Zone fan.

This is a good companion book to an outstanding television series. Each of the episodes is reviewed in varying amounts of detail (a weakness which the author allowed to bleed though into his work) from very detailed and complete with character quotes to a sketchy couple of lines. However, each episode has Rod's introduction and summary included for the reader's enjoyment. The real benefit of reading this work is the behind the scenes insights you'll get on the writers and producers of the series -- as well as the typical network ratings vs production battle. Some coverage of the more used actors may also be found in the volume -- although detail is limited. The book itself is organized by season and show - with some background on the 'why' of the series. Individual episodes can easily be located making this an excellent 'by the television' book to have. Stills from the series are limited to what appears to be a 'stock' photo; but this doesn't detract much from the overall value of the book. One thing is for certain ... you'll know which episodes Marc though well of and which he didn't from the capsulations. Ones he didn't like get a very short treatment.* Recommended *~P~

An important book to anyone interested in Oriental rugs. Well written with excellent color plates. Try and purchase the 1992 edition used. The color plates are more accurate. The 2016 edition is the exact same book - no updates- but smaller print and pages with less accurate color plates. The earlier edition is much preferred.

love this book - if you are a rug collector, this is a must-have for your library!!

Useful overview of carpets

Fantastic book!

Expensive, but worth it. Photos are very good.

Alright, so you've just gone back from Turkey or Iran where you marvelled at all those rugs in the bazaars. Your interest was picked but you feel utterly lost not knowing your kilim from your sumakh. You want to buy a book informative enough to teach you a thing or two and keep your heart beating but you end up lost in a maze of titles. Well, look no further, TRIBAL RUGS by J. Opie is right here to show you the way and take you to ruggies' heaven.I own a bunch of books on rugs (too many), being addicted myself, but this is the one I keep going back to. The book is very well laid out, the text is clear and unpretentious, the plates well-chosen and well photographed. It is much more than a coffee-table book. It is getting quite scarce so do yourself a favor and get a copy before you embark on a new Anatolian hunting trip.

4 and a half starsA very informative book liberally illustrated with color plates of some of the most exceptional types of oriental rugs. An excellent commentary written by one of the real gentlemen of the rug business. The author offers some of his own unique theories and insights. Jim does tend to put emphasis on his own particular favorite types of rugs such as Persian tribal rug weaving so know that it is not a comprehensive guide. This in no way lessens the importance of this book. Good as a coffee table book for anyone who appreciates beauty as well as must have for the rug aficionado.

I've read a LOT of books about women in business and the issues we face in progressing (or not progressing) in our careers. Susan's book is one of my favorites. It's packed with both theory and practical examples that bring all the issues to life. She's open about her own areas of development - she makes herself vulnerable to her readers by saying, "I'm an expert and I'm still wrestling with some of the issues I write about. We're all works in progress!" I think what I like most about the book is that Susan puts the responsibility for women's advancement clearly at our own doorstep - none of this glass ceiling whining, but rather just practical advice for the things as women we need to do to take charge of our own development. It's a must-read for male leaders as well because it will help understand the female psyche and the issues with which even the most senior and talented women often wrestle. Any man who cares about the development of half the workforce should care about this book. Anxiously awaiting Susan's next masterpiece...

Truly a great read-- for women, young girls, professionals-- for ALL. The framework the book provides is right on and the stories are experience based which allow for immediate action. The authenticity of the book and the way it is written makes it a wonderful experience to learn and do!

Enlightening - Inspiring - Refreshing:This book sheds a crystal clear spotlight on the path forward as women advance our careers towards equanimity and past the audacious 'CLIFF'. Many books on the market today approach this subject armed with an over kill of data, and can become so prescriptive that they don't quite hit the mark towards direct relevance to the individual reader. Susan graciously infuses and leverages a myriad of rich research WHILE also connecting directly to you as the reader, opening your heart in a way that makes you feel validated, heard and not alone with the challenges we face in today's world. Susan also gives us language, to the things that we can't quite put our finger on, that continue to trip us up. While also weaving in powerful stories of REAL corporate women around the globe who have navigated this path and continue to be game changers for other women. It is a must read for sure if you are a women leader looking to continue your career path forward.

This book not only provides the construct of what might be getting in a leaders' way to moving "up the ladder', but also provides insights that allowed me to learn to interact with the world in a way that is relational and developmental. It showed me that I am not alone on this journey to figuring out what might get in my way to success. It showed me the things that I might be dismissing (networking) or even creating my own bias around (over rowing the boat) that has been getting in the way of my own success and that I can do something about it. Most of all, it introduced me to the voice in my head, gave her a name, and allowed me to figure out how to reset and come at life and conversations in a balanced way. Thank you Susan Brady and Linkage for putting this point of view into the market of leadership and specifically women in leadership!

This book was purchased for me, having taken a large step up in my career. I do not typically read business or leadership books but I did find it easy to read, the author was relatable and it was not filled with business jargon or above the understanding of someone not in the business world. I’d recommend this book to other leaders, regardless of their field.

Caves are fascinating places, so I can understand the appeal to these young soccer players and their coach to go exploring. The individual stories are told with great care and respect. How their stories are woven together to show how the boys were rescued could only have been written by a first rate journalist. Well done!

Better than Matt Gutman's book, who got some basic facts wrong (so I question the accuracy of his book). This book focuses more on the unsung heros (not just the military, government, and divers) who provided resources and support to the rescue, including a few details of life in the cave from an interview with one of the kids and his father and only disclosed with the father's permission.

This is a fantastically written book. Even knowing the outcome, the suspense makes it difficult to put down. Beautiful.

I was able to pre-order the book at a discounted price. I was concerned that it would just be a rehash of the news stories, but figured that at the discounted price it was worth a shot. I was not disappointed. The author shares much that was not included in the news. The detailed account of the rescue literally took my breath away. I am a certified open water diver, not a cave diver, but I still cannot imagine how these guys rescued the kids and coach. It was a miracle Although they don't think they are heroes, I disagree, they are that and more. The book also highlights how much cooperation and love was shared among all the worlds citizens and especially the Thai people to accomplish this. In a world so filled with hate, this book truly shows that there are some good people out there. It also covers some of the difficulties and conflicts that needed to be overcome. Well written interesting story. A must-read in my opinion.

I am amazed by the rescuers and various military outlets who came together to perform this rescue. Well written.

Well written and many details not previously shared by media. A story of true international cooperation with a happy ending

I loved this book of the rescue of the 12 boys and the coach. Well written, with lots of details on the boys and the coach, and the rescue, but also on all the people involved in the rescue, and how they meticulously planned, rehearsed, and made adjustments to their strategy. And the one Australian cave rescue diver, Dr. Harry, who may very well have made all the difference in a successful rescue. This was a fascinating book that I could not put down. Disclaimer: I am not related to Liam Cochrane...as far as I know!

This book does not dig deep, but it is not intended to. If you are looking to understand the latest trends in high availability architecture this is an excellent book. I feel this book is for business personnel looking to improve their knowledge , experienced software engineers that want to move away from legacy patterns, software engineers that are looking to become systems architects, and engineers just entering the software development path. This book is a good place to pull check lists and double check that your plan for development does not have gaps that are easy to fill, but could cost you dearly if you don't address them early.

Do not recommend this book if you are experienced in the field. Even for beginners, this book only provide a very shallow description on various topics and doesn't do a good job explaining each of the concepts. I don't think it will be that useful anyway. The content is also very repetitive.

Hi. The author of the previous review looked at an early version of the book (the "first three chapters" version). The book is now complete and has 26 chapters of, I hope, useful and relevant content. Take a look and certainly let me know what you think!

The book provides a good high level overview of cloud based microservice architectures. Not a lot of advanced information. Would be useful for new/mid-level readers.

I'm biased, because I know the author. That said, Lee has a bunch of experience helping enterprises working on large-scale projects. This book is not technology-specific ("get AWS T-4 servers") but higher-level ("plan for X to happen"). It's very valuable for when you want to GO BIG.

Not a lot of depth.

My company purchased this book. This is a pleasantly-fast read. For somebody new to the game, this is a solid review of high-level common sense ideals and approaches. It is like an "Intro to XYZ" book you would see in a college sophomore's stack of first-semester books. For experienced admins or designers, you have probably gained all the wisdom there is in this book through sheer experience. It is slightly over-priced in my opinion for the amount of knowledge transfer either group would glean from the pages. It is about a $20 value IMHO.

The book provides a very high-level overview of the fundamental aspects of building highly-available service-based information systems, for cloud-based or on-premises systems. The overview is pretty good, but don't expect a lot of details. The author's experience based on hard lessons learned from his years working for AWS and New Relic definitely shows, and some chapters get much more attention than the others.I've particularly liked chapters on risk management and mitigation, especially the discussion about creating and managing a risk matrix, as well as the chapter dedicated to clarifying concepts of likelihood and severity. You don't see this topic taken this seriously in many texts discussing the building of highly available and scalable systems, but without proper risk management mindset, you are almost always one step away from a big mess waiting to happen, without you having planned for it.The sections on microservices are rather light, and you'll definitely need another book on this important architectural pattern. The chapters and discussion on establishing and clarifying service ownership, service tiers, and service-level agreements again provide a good overview, and draws attention to the importance of percentiles when it comes to establishing baselines for performance and checking if things are within expected bounds. To some experienced readers these will sound pretty basic, but nevertheless I think these discussions have educational value for many readers. The last part of the book is looking at things from cloud computing, and even though the chapters are short, the author's guidance provide valuable experience summary for different types of use cases, as well as drawing attention to pitfalls in this complex world of computing. Conclusion: If you want to a good overview of how current scalable, highly available, microservices-based software intensive applications are built, operated, risk-managed using cloud computing, this book accomplishes this objective. But if you want more details, you'll have to dive into other books.
