I've been cooking and baking (pretty darn well, if I do say so) for fifty years, and while I still learn ideas and pick up recipes or techniques from new food books, it's quite rare for any book about food to wake me up and actually inspire me to re-think. What a treat! Lior Lev Sercarz produced a book beautiful and artistic enough that you may be tempted to think, "Just a coffee-table book." But in the deliberately spare descriptions and careful lists and suggestions lie all the directions you need to find yourself a new universe of flavors.

I have been looking for a book like this almost my whole lifetime. Everyone tells you what spices to use with what food but they don't tell you which spices blend well together. The Spice Companion lets you know the spices that work well together. I love it enough to purchase other copies for family members.

I own a spice blend company and have been creating and designing my own spices (and spice blends for chefs & restaurants,) for over 25 years. This book is a must have for any cook or chef. The book is just fabulous. Both in its appearance and content. Just a professional masterpiece, with no exaggeration. Good job!

This book has changed my life. I have read it from cover-to-cover and it has utterly changed the way I think about cooking and layering of flavors. I was pretty damned good home chef before, but this has upped my game. My spice collection had quadrupled and I think about spices now much differently than I did before this book came into my world.

"Ingredients, Seasonings, and Techniques" essential to cooking enjoyment. I love this book ! Amazing that you can buy it for much less than 30.00! This is a book for a cooking library ...The page Parsley led me to the word Petruzilia which led me to look that up and find Cooking Shakshuka! (A very good recipe.) It is a beautiful book with wonderful drawings of the herbs and spices . It covers the most well known herbs and spices of the world that are commonly used every day..Especially the adventurous cook!

This book will inspire anyone who is interested in cooking and creating more interesting meals. It has beautiful illustrations and instructions for blending spices in unique and tasty ways. The Spice Companion contains some recipes, but is not a cookbook. If you would like to learn more about spices and have comprehensive information in one place, this is the book for you. I purchased it as a Christmas gift for my daughter and will be ordering another one for myself.

I’d give this book 10 stars if I could. What a great culinary resource and so beautifully done.Backgrounds on the spices and herbs with gorgeous pictures, history of the spice, traditional uses and recipes.Love this book!

This book starts out good and then just gets better and better with each new Pilgrimage. Wright takes the reader on a journey with such descriptive writing that one wonders if his degree is in literature, instead of theology and history. Wright deals with the idea of Pilgimage on the road to Damascus, at the Jordan, in the Wilderness, in Galilee where most of Jesus minsitry took place, in Jerusalem, on the mountain where God is experienced in transfigurative ways, Gethsemene, where the agony of purpose takes place, the Cross (the best chapter), the empty tomb and then reflections on current day Israel. This book will take you away and cause you to feel like you were on the mountain, at the Jordan and was a witness of the cross. Wright's reflections are insightful, powerful and moving. Get this book.

Originally composed as a teaching series and orientation for pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land from Wright's parish in the late Nineties, this short, informal book contains some of the most touching and effective prose Wright has...wrought. The chapters move logically, geographically, and spiritually through a series of sites throughout Israel, and each could be the grist for a wonderful day of prayer and reflection, whether one is physically in the land of Israel, or is on a sojourn of the spirit. The Way of the Lord effectively brings together Wright's great erudition in Biblical history, his vocation as a pastor and curate, and his respectful insights concerning the issues on the ground. This is a fitting handbook for pilgrimage, offering the wisdom and challenge of a powerful mind and the companionate comfort of a warm heart. Highly recommended.

4 stars if you're going to Jerusalem! ....it's a devotional. not really a book to read with a purpose other than discovering yourself with a couple of thought provoking historical/geographical nuggets. The Epilogue stands alone as an excellent intro to the current situation in Israel/Palestine. It can be found online as a PDF.

I am about halfway through and really enjoying this. It is about pilgrimage in the holy land, but applies to our walk with the Lord wherever we are. I though that as a theologian he might be too academic or stuffy. He writes in a very warm, and accessible way. Very insightful. Lots to chew on!

Originally intended for those taking a trip to Israel, Tom Wright dramatically and skillfully points out that the true Holy Land is wherever believers are. He points out that a trip to the Holy Land may be of some value but not as a matter of 'earning points' with the Lord. An example of how he relates his "tour" to personal life is when he is talking of visiting Jerusalem. Located at 3000 feet above sea level, It doesn't take much of a journey on either side of Jerusalem to find oneself in a wilderness. Just as one may feel 'on top of the world' one moment and the next find oneself in a physical or emotional wilderness. We have all been there.I can't recommend this book highly enough. Once again Tom Wright proves he is one of the top theologians in the world, regardless of denomination or location.

This will be brief. It is simply a statement about my "hero" in a sphere for which he is often not known, especially in the States. This book is the heart of Tom Wright, the pastor. Written as a pastor to part of his flock going on pilgrimage to the Holy Land, it breathes the spirit of pastoral concern. At the same time it reveals a real knowledge of the Land - its history, geography, culture, and current struggles. For those who think that they know NT Wright, whether as friend or foe, it reveals what I like about him most - an academic who left the daily world of academia for pastoral ministry. And what a pastor he must be to his flock - now in the diocese of Durham. I have been to the "Holy Land" forty times and have read dozens of books on Israel, past and present. I will treasure this one more than any of them. I am in the process of buying up all of the copies I can, since it appears to be out of print.Read it as preparation for your physical and spiritual pilgrimages. It is a wonderful guide to both.

This book opened my eyes to new insights into the biblical narrative and how that relates to my own life. I'm not going to the Holy Land, but I am going on pilgrimage. But I think it is also helpful for those who see that our life is a journey. I loved this book!

Didn't finish because I got confused about past and present.

I liked this book, despite some issues with punctuation and contradictory information.

Missing Us can be read as a standalone. However, I would recommend reading Missing Destiny first to get the full story and take on the parents from Shauna's eyes.This is Dr. Atherton Nathan and Reina's book.I was a bit annoyed in how this one went down. Terry was able to give a bit of background information without revealing too much to the step-dad, so why couldn't he do the same with his wife twelve years prior when she was leaving him for cheating?I guess I just don't like the fact that the separation could've been avoided. This illustrious "Organization" that is to blame for a lot of their problems was so easily accepting of his resignation that I'm not sure why he didn't try this before when his marriage was ending

Emotional story filled with drama and suspense that keeps you guessing what will happen next. Terry has secrets that he brought into his new marriage which torn it apart. Now he wants a second chance but what is done is done and can’t be undone or can it? Trust is needed before they can rebuild their relationship but with secrets still in the way forgiveness maybe but I don’t see how that is possible.I did think he could have given her a bone without giving the whole thing away. I understand why he needed to keep quite but I just think this relationship could have been saved before it fell apart. It was a good read with suspense. It held my attention and I truly enjoyed it.

Terry and Reina had a deep love, and a strong family life. But, Terry came into the marriage with secrets that caused the marriage to end. It's been years since the divorce, but he wants and needs to reunite with Reina. Secrets still exist which have to be overcome before trust and forgiveness can begin. Intrigue and drama abound in this second book in the series. Though the secrets may be hard to believe, they are possible. (This is fiction.) The characters are strong yet vulnerable. Story is a standalone but is more complete when read together. Loved the continuation of Zach and Shauna's lives. Voluntarily read ARC for honest review.

This is an enjoyable, fast paced story, I couldn’t put it down. There is plenty of drama, and suspense that had me wanting to know what going to happen next. I suggest reading Missing Destiny (book one) prior to reading this book. There are events occurring in this book that also take place in book one. It would give more depth and understanding to the story by reading the series in order. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Still waters run deep

I've read book 1 and now book 2 of this series. This book really resonated with me as I was able to understand the dilemma of having to lead two lives and never being able to tell your spouse everything. As an Officer and Paramedic myself I can understand why it's hard to keep so much from someone you love.I loved this book and the characters, Traci does a remarkable job introducing her characters and making a reader feel like you know the characters as a friend or family member.

PZ Myers is a professor of biology at the University of Minnesota, Morris. He was named Humanist of the Year in 2009 by the American Humanist Association and received the International Humanist Award in 2011 from the International Humanist and Ethical Union. This book was not what I expected. It does relay the details of the Tambora volcano explosion and aftermath, but it is concerned mostly with a social impact. There are explanations of the science, but far too many side trips that include poetry verses or artistic works of the respective period. Save it for another book. This was difficult to get through and at times boring as hell. There were bright spots. When sticking to the main narrative, it could be interesting, but this book comes as a mishmash, trying to be too many things to too many people. I read this book using immersion reading while listening to the audiobook. The narrator's voice was far too soft and monotone as to put you to sleep.

I purchased this book and recommended to my book club because I heard the author speak at the University of Illinois, Springfield. On the plus side, I learned about a number of events of which I was generally ignorant before reading the book. The book also prompted me to reflect on the events outlined and the strength of the evidence that they were connected to the eruption of Tambora. I concluded that, while there were many arguments for association, the author does not always consider competing or complementary events that affected the many results he describes. In addition, the book would profit from some judicial editing and eliminating the many redundancies.

What an excellent, exceptionally detailed book! Wood looks deeply and in extraordinary detail at a disaster and weather event with global implications. Like an analytical detective, Wood brings together primary research from across the world, looking with masterly comprehension at extensive phenomena, bringing together a timely and fascinating story of a weather apocalypse that was essentially impossible to understand at the moment when it occurred.I recommend this book without reserve. I was fortunate to discover it.

This is one of the rare books that is as dramatic as the events it describes. Wood's detailing of the catastrophic events in the years and decades following Tambora's eruption in April 1815 walks that fine line between being academically thorough and publicly engaging masterfully, using the heart-wrenching literature from around the world to give human contexts to the climatology she describes.Put simply, this sets the standard for modern academic writing, and provides a sobering warning of the human cost of climatic extremes.

How one work supposedly about a volcano can touch in such an engaging manner on so many other topics of the current day as well as history my ability to adequately describe. One cannot read this book without being appalled at one's former ignorance. So much of the 19th century is related to this event, yet we learned none of the connections in our education. The incredible scholarship that went into this work is best illustrated by the fact that half its page length is footnotes and references.

This book falls under the category of "stuff to think about more". Ostensibly, it's a sort of butterfly effect story about how a major volcanic eruption in one side of the world changed lives on the other side, but that also makes it another strong evidential story supporting climate change theories and our general inter-connectedness through nature. I can't comment on the science itself, but I think the larger theme that we as part of the natural world cannot always understand the impact of our lives on others', that perhaps we need to broaden our perspective is very provocative and worth the read.

A very interesting account of the effect of the Tambora eruption pieced together from various historical documents. Especially interesting when you consider that the authors of the documents had no idea that the weather effects they were seeing were caused by a distant volcano. I found it a bit heavy handed on the Frankenstein tie-in, but that didn't spoil my enjoyment of this book.

Very informative book about a nineteenth century eruption that changed the world climate, economy, and culture. More about this should be taught in schools. The writing leaves a little to be desired, being kind of academic ("in the following chapters I will show...") but it's not overly difficult and the information is well worth it. The author is an English professor so there is ample understanding of the literary and cultural aspects of the events.

This book is having a profound effect on me. I had expected it to be interesting and enjoyable, which it is; but I hadn't thought about it affecting my own beliefs. One example was reading The Daughters Of Tzelafchad. Although I had ordered the book new, a corner was folded at the top of the page at the beginning of the chapter. So, that is where I began reading. Even though I knew the story and the outcome, I felt myself holding my breath as each daughter described the anxiety awaiting her fate. When Milcah is the first to know of their victory, directly from Moses himself, she describes a heartfelt experience of being alone with this great prophet, that I felt myself envy. Her last line is - "I know from the ache in my chest that I will never be alone again." The second I read that, I had a thought, that if I could somehow manifest that ache within my own chest and repeat it everyday, I could bring about a change that I yearn for in my own life. I had never had a thought like that. It's obvious that Rabbi Hammer is a talented writer, but there is also something powerful and magical in her writing: at least there was for me. I can't wait to read her other books!

I adore this book. As a Jew and a woman, this book resonates deeply. Each story is fairly short, but filled with gorgeous detail and supporting quotes/sources (the author also adds a list of further reading and a bibliography, which I love). I have had an amazing time reading it and I can't wait to read it again!

The Introduction and the Notes to the reader help give backround in Midrash for the unintiated and make the tales themselves more understandable.Havdala was terrific. The concept of pale Eve meeting dark Lilith in the Garden of Eden on the eve of shabbat and discovering her "womanhood" transported me.Reading Naamah was like chatting with and listening to the wise women who helped me through the rough times in my life.The Daughters of Tzelafchad reminded me that we each have to claim our share of worldy goods but we must be wise about how we do it.It had never occured to me to see Queen Vashti as another victim. The story opened my eyes to looking at things in a new way.If Jill Hammer wrote the book as a teaching tool it worked with me.

Vivid details, educational, creative, magical- the characters and time period are brought to life.Inspired me to delve further into the Torah. A truly excellent contribution to humanity's Torah studies.

Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down! Enjoyed it even though it wasn't exactly what I had expected when I purchased it. I'm not even sure what it was I had expected but I'm mighty glad I did decide to buy it. I do reread it.

These are fantastic stories, brilliantly and intricately interwoven with classical midrash - traditional Jewish biblical interpretation - and independently engaging as well. Hammer also includes clear and engaging notes for each story, including the biblical texts on which each story builds and the thinking that led her to each story.
