good

This book has too my typo that makes it almost impossible to read. I hate to read a book like this.

The spectral theorem of David Hilbert, John von Neumann, and Marshall Stone gives a complete answer to the question of which operators admit a diogonal representation, up to unitary equivalence, and makes the question precise as well. The theorem states that these are the normal operators in Hilbert space. This includes the selfadjoint operators which represent observables in quantum physics, and the more interesting ones are unbounded. Remember the Heisenberg commutation relations do not admit bounded solutions. But there is a mathematical distinction between formally selfadjoint operators (also called symmetric operators) and the selfadjoint ones. It is only the latter to which the spectral theorem applies. The distinction between the two is understood from a pair of indicies (n,m), now called deficiency indices. In some applications they representboundary conditions, and when n = m, and the boundary conditions are assigned, the symmetric operator in question has selfadjoint extensions. And we know from von Neumann what they are. A central question in the book concerns the issue of unequal indices. Then selfadjoint extensions do not exist, at least not unless the Hilbert space is enlarged. A central theme in the book is that in case of unequal indices, there is a larger Hilbert space which does in fact admit selfadjoint extensions. The co-authors, along with Naimark, are the authorities on this. Because of applications to PDE theory and to physics, there has been constant interest in the theme right up to the present. Even the current interest, and lively activity, in quantum measurement theory (in connection with quantum information theory) and entanglement brings back to to the fore this old issue around diagonalizing operators by passing to an "enlarged" (or dilated)Hilbert space, or looking for an orthonormal basis in the extended Hilbert space. So the theme of the book is still current.

great book for a back ground reading .....

From School Library Journal

Gr 6 Up—Skillfully crafted by her two granddaughters, this fascinating biography of renowned author Madeleine L'Engle illuminates the key personality traits, relationships, experiences, and perspectives that shaped her life and writing. With warmth, candor, and insight, the authors draw on journals, letters, poems, family stories, and more to portray L'Engle's growth from a solitary, awkward child to a literary success. The narrative is filled with poignant and entertaining anecdotes that convey L'Engle's love for her imperfect but supportive parents, her insecurities and eagerness to be accepted by peers, her creative independence and determination, and her early, lifelong passion for writing. This richly documented, intimate biography will give readers and writers of every age a deeper understanding of the beloved writer. In addition, readers will discover the pride, understanding, and bonds of kinship that emerge when generations within a family share life experiences. Filled with pictures and journal entries and correspondence to and from Madeleine L’Engle, BECOMING MADELEINE gives readers an intimate peek at this award-winning author’s life. It has just the right amount of depth to make the read substantial and interesting without being weighty, reveals more than enough about Madeleine to learn who she was at various points in her life, and includes a heartfelt and heartrending introduction and conclusion by the authors - Charlotte Jones Voiklis and Léna Roy, L’Engle’s granddaughters. It is a captivating and delightful and inspirational read that shares pivotal moments in Madeleine’s life up to the moment when A WRINKLE IN TIME was accepted for publication. It tells of a girl who always had a passion for writing, who was determined and tenacious and ambitious, who was often socially awkward but who thrived nevertheless, who was confident yet shy, who was brave yet fearful, who was by no means perfect but who strived to be better, and who understood that who she was encompassed every version of herself.BECOMING MADELEINE’s authors have penned a loving and respectful and incredibly endearing telling of the story of Madeleine’s life. They left in many of the hardships the author faced as a child, young, and not-so-young, adult. They shared her mistakes, her successes, her failures, her disappointments, her setbacks. They showed her journey as a writer - from poet, to novelist, to playwright, to published author - as well as the side trips that took her away from and brought her back to writing. And they allowed a glimpse into some of the more personal aspects of her and her family’s life.Madeleine L’Engle’s biography can be enjoyed by readers of many ages. It is a quick read, that flows beautifully, even interspersed with images and other lovely distractions. It has more of a story-like quality than that of a typical biography, allowing readers to easily connect with and become charmed by Madeleine. It promises a happy ending, just like Madeline L’Engle wanted for her stories - although its epilogue, divulging just how cherished L’Engle was by her granddaughters, will tug on the heartstrings.Whether a new or lifelong fan of author Madeleine L’Engle, BECOMING MADELEINE is a must, must, must.

Having loved Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time and its sequels when I was young, and having recently seen the movie, I was interested in learning more about the author. Becoming Madeleine is a rich biography written by her granddaughters, sourced largely based on L'Engle's journals, letters and postcards through the years (she was a frequent sender of postcards to her mother.)It was fascinating to see her very early interest in writing, and disheartening to see that various teachers put roadblocks in her way, often not believing that a young girl was capable of writing high-quality poems and essays. L'Engle's early ventures in playwriting and acting were unknown to me, as were the details of her life with her actor husband. The granddaughters largely leave themselves out of it, describing things in a matter-of-fact style. I did find it odd that the book ends with the (eventual) publication of A Wrinkle in Time - I had expected to read more of what came after that. There is a short afterword with some explanations (and admissions of minor name changes to avoid confusion.)That L'Engle eventually became a well-known and beloved author, overcoming the biases against women in the time she was growing up, is a testament to her talent and determination. The recent movie is being held up as an example to young girls, but I would say that this book also serves that purpose.

While this might be marketed as a middle school biography any writer, wannabe writer, or fan of Madeleine L'Engle will love this book. Beautifully written, you can tell the authors truly loved their grandmother.

Filled with anecdotes we would never have known, photos, journal entries, and more, we get to know the A to Z of Madeleine L'Engle growing up. Having read many of her books, I found it fascinating as an adult, though of course this is a book or middle readers (young adults would also like it.)Especially interesting was her early streak of determination and independence, not often found in stories about writers. I also enjoyed seeing how creative she was at such a young age and how she handled that creativity and used it to express herself.

This book isn't outstanding literature, but it's very interesting to anyone who has read and fallen in love with A Wrinkle in Time or another of Madeline L'Engle's books.

This biography of my favorite author, written for younger readers, somehow transported me back to the days, like the ones L'Engle once recalled, of being able to float down the stairs. It's lovely and heartfelt, and I was honored that her granddaughters shared even more of this amazing woman with her readers.

Well written, lots of photos, nice perspective on a favorite author. After I read it, I bought copies for gifts, i was that impressed.

Loved this book! A nice companion for L'Engle fans.

Amazon.com Review

Satisfy the shark-fact feeding frenzy! These torpedo-shaped swimmers are an obsession for many kids. In Everything Sharks, exciting photos depict great whites, hammerheads, and more. Scientists tell hair-raising tales about encounters. With its awesome facts and action-packed images, this book brings kids close to the mysterious lives of sharks. Q&A with "Everything Sharks" author Ruth A. Musgrave Q: What is your favorite thing about sharks? A: There are 450-500 kinds of sharks and they come in different sizes, shapes, and lifestyles. Oh, and I think it’s astonishing that 10% of sharks are bioluminescent (glow-in-the-dark)! Q: What is one little known fact about sharks that might make people less afraid of them? A: Most sharks are about the size of a baseball bat. Most sharks also live in the deep-sea, no where near people. Q: In NGK Everything Sharks there is a list of real and often odd things that are more likely to happen to you than being attacked by a shark. Things like…you are more likely to win American Idol or stub your toe! When did you first fall in love with sharks? A: It became a never-ending fascination when I first heard about the tiny cookie-cutter shark, and how it preys on whales and other sharks! (pg 29, 37) I loved it and had to know more. That led to the realization that great whites and blue sharks are the exception, not the rule, to sharks and their natural history. Q: They say dogs are a man’s best friend. Who is a shark’s best friend? A: Kids, I hope. They can be the voice to protect sharks as enthusiastically as people protect whales and other ocean animals. Q: Tell us about Fintastic Friday! It sounds… fantastic??? A: Fintastic Friday: Giving sharks a Voice is a new, fun, and important holiday for kids. The purpose is to celebrate sharks. Part of the reason shark populations are declining so rapidly, and with so little fanfare, is because they are portrayed as villains. The goal of Fintastic Friday is to change that view, to present sharks as they really are: awesome and important predators that the oceans need. Everyone can celebrate in their own way. Maybe learn more about sharks by reading Everything Sharks, post a sign on your door, make a craft or even hold a "Sharks in the Park Rally" with friends or classmates. As the holiday grows in popularity so will the appreciation--and then protection--of sharks. Q: The photos in this book are incredible. What’s your favorite photo in Everything Sharks? A: Wow, that’s the hardest question. Every page has stunning photos and there many of sharks I’ve never seen photos of before. Every time I look at the book I find a new favorite. A couple of my favorites include the prickly shark (pg 14) and frilled shark (pg 37) because they are so unusual. I love the silly grin on the lemon shark (pg 44). It looks so cute and that’s a word one doesn’t often hear in the same sentence with a shark!

My 4 yr old grandson became fascinated with sharks while watching "shark week" on tv last summer. Since he loves books and stories, I thought it would be nice to find him some books about sharks. There are lots of books about sharks for kids, but this is the best one I've found. Most of the books are a bit scary for 4-6 yr olds. Yes, sharks can hurt or kill people or other sea animals, but this National Geographic Book for kids presents all the information about sharks in a benign, non-sensational manner and there are no scary (bloody body part)) photos. This book is colorful and well designed, in order to capture a child's attention. My grandson is now quite well-versed in his knowledge of all varieties of sharks. This book also includes maps to show kids where the various types of sharks live. This book is a great learning tool for geography, oceanography, concept of space and time and of course, shark facts! In my opinion, National Geographic usually does a great job in presenting "adult" concepts and gearing them to young children. If you have a shark lover in your family, he or she would really enjoy this book.

EXCELLENT book with lots of colorful pictures and information. Exactly what you would expect from National Geographic Kids. We gave it to our 9 year old shark-loving son and he was super excited as he looked through all the pages and then went back and read the whole book. He references it quite often. Good buy.

Did you know that sharks can here pray 820 feet away (over 2 football fields) away? Or that sharks can smell blood one-half mile away? or that sharks like the color yellow because it is easy to see under water? These and other fascinating facts about sharks can be found in this book. Maintaining their high standards, National Geographic has produced another book that begs to be shared. Whether the reader shares facts like those above or the gorgeous photographs, the book is perfect for all those shark-lovers out there, and even those who don't particularly care for sharks will find the information interesting. The book would also be very useful in teaching students how to read graphs, diagrams, and maps, as well as the importance of good captions. Highly recommended.

My son loses himself in books. He loves learning new facts, and being a 2nd grade boy, also loves sharks. This book is filled with enriching details and enticing pictures, just right for young minds on the hunt for more knowledge.

We just love National Geographic kids books in our house. They are very educational as well as fun to read. This book was used during out Ocean themed week. And I will also use it for a shark unit I plan on teaching as well.

Small but detailed.

Great book for any kids enamored with sharks provided that cover photo doesn't scare the bejesus out of them - LOL! This was purchased for an 8-year boy who loved it.

My daughter loves this series.

I was reading part of Kevin Starr's preface to Delta Primer aloud to one of my kids tonight, and thought I'd check in on Jane Wolff--didn't know she taught at Washington University. Clicked through to here and couldn't believe there was only one review. I just bought a second copy (used, for $15? on Amazon) as my first copy has become part of the lending library of life. I know it was loved by two architects and a carpooling advocate here in the Bay Area. . . .I've only been here for 10 years, and certainly didn't GET the delta until reading this book. But you don't really read it. You immerse yourself in it, you get absorbed by it. You wallow around in it. You let it bang around in your head--in my case for a couple of years, in great detail. The multi-layered sophistication of the graphics is amazing. The way Wolff conveys fundamental concepts is wonderful. If he doesn't already, Edward Tufte should raise the book up in his hands every time he conducts a high priced workshop.

If you are really into understanding the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta in California, then you'll love this book. Not a light read.

This book is primarily a reproduction of a deck of playing cards. The front and back of each card is depicted on facing pages: a colored map on one side and a black-and-white graphic on the other. Each card is reproduced at 3.5 by 5 inches. The cards are supposed to convey information (or perhaps only data) about the Sacramento Delta, but they can't because they're too small to be read or deciphered. In almost all cases, there is too much detail to be reproduced in a graphic of this size. Much of the graphics text is about a millimeter tall. Most of the map data cannot be read without a magnifying glass.Perhaps to make up for the lack of information obtainable from the playing cards, the author provides annotations. While many of the snippets were interesting, the selection of this or that fact seemed arbitrary and out of context. I would bet that anyone would learn more about the Sacramento Delta by reading seven pages of the author's introduction than by "reading" the 120 pages of playing card depictions. At first I thought the book was designed to be coffee-table size with each illustration being three or four times bigger. But this would defeat the conceit of the project being a deck playing cards, which I'm assuming was predicated on a shuffling metaphor to enable multiple meanings and divergent strategies. That the book "is scrupuloulsy non-partisan" as Kevin Starr writes in the premise, is a polite way of saying that the book doesn't have a point of view, or even a point really, if it can't successfully convey information through the conceit of its own devising.

Washington Univ. Prof. Jane Wolff's "Delta Primer" explores the California Delta, both a natural and man-made phenomenon just east of the Bay Area which today is being used or fought over by a diverse constituency, including developers intent on paving it over. Her wonderful, beautifully illustrated book addresses these different dimensions, making the point that the Delta's future has become like a game of chance in which all of us hold the cards. You can see recent reviews of the book by landscape architect Barbara Stauffacher Solomon in the Winter 04 issue of _line ([...]) and by SF Chronicle urban design writer John King ([...] It's also available in paperback, published by San Francisco's William Stout. A work of art and dedicated scholarship, it's highly recommended. And after you read it, get to work saving the Delta! - John Parman

While watching Ken Burns's documentary about Jazz, I noticed that most of the insightful and clever comments quoted on it came from Eddie Condon. So I ordered his book to see what else Mr. Condon had to say. For the most part, he continued to be insightful and clever. I enjoyed the book. It arrived when it was supposed to arrive, and I was pleased to get it.

Maybe the book contains a little more about Eddie Condon's up-bringing and family than you would want to know, but most of it is so interesting and informative that it is hard to put it down. The basic format is for him to relate quite detailed and entertaining descriptions of groups of muscians who played together at different times in different places, and often, what they played. The hardships endured by the early and "pure" jazz musicians make one wonder how they survived. It was certainly a hand-to-mouth existence, and time and time again they had to help each other. Quite often, when some had work, others didn't, and the ways they would help each other were quite resourceful and often good for a few laughs. As Condon describes his playing days, a reader will bump into many who would become the jazz greats of our time--early in their careers when they also endured their challenges to make a living and gain fame. The book does a good job of describing how they viewed their situation and the world around them.I believe a reader will clearly learn a lot about the early history of jazz, and will be highly entertained while reading it.

A perfect story about the beginning of a kind of music the world had not heard before. The best definition of Jazz I have heard yet. This is a great rendition, and a full fledged journey, of one man's discovery of Jazz, and his instant love of a music that defied translation. And nothing has changed. Please read for yourself about the people who heard the sound, took up their own instruments, and joined in on wave after wave of instrumentality and virtuosity and comradirie and pure talent and played and played and played, for anyone who would listen, something they could only call - music.

That's jazz history from one guy who helped create it! I am an admirer of Eddie and he writes this book just like he talks (okay, but without the cussing). This is the way the guy lived and for a while, I lived like that, too.

Purchased this book because Eddie Condon's father had a bar in my home town. It was an excellent book and gave me some excellent historical information in it. Also pictures of some of the buildings. Great find and great book.

Husband loved it! His generations music.

Writes as well as he plays.

It's an interesting book. I was hoping for more actual technique, but there are a lot of books out there on Kindle Unlimited that do this, and I'm glad to have a little background (which is mainly what this book provides.)

I bought this book after watching a youtube presentation by Joshua Foer regarding his research for the book. I read through this book impatiently, because the reason for buying it was to learn the memory techniques he described in his Youtube video. I found his accounts of the eccentric contestants in the US and world memory tournaments to be overly detailed. Nonetheless, his writing skill are strong.I do wish to warn you that if you try out the book's memory techniques, practicing them can be addicting, as they must have been for the author. Within six weeks, I passed all three of the FCC Amateur Radio license tests. Once starting to practice memorizing the concepts and answers behind the large question pools (1,450), I couldn't stop. Now, having reined in my compulsiveness, I just use the techniques learned from this book to give presentations without using notes and to study for exams. So if you are at all manic when it comes to learning, you may find that this book will magnify those learning habits. This book is excellent journalism rather than a memory technique book. He states that fact and points you towards actual memory technique books. I have purchased and read some of them. Those books do not compare with the motivational aspects of this book to actually try out memory techniques to see if they can enhance your life. This book is a fun read and it may motivate you to learn something new - something that requires lots of memorization. Read it and go take a bar exam, like the one for US Tax Court.

This is a great book. It's engaging and well-written. However, I bought it to learn the memory techniques, not so much for the anecdotes. But, the anecdotes are rich and provide an entertaining trail to go down through the book. You can learn some memory techniques here, but the author does not focus on them so I would not call this a step-by-step guide to improving your memory so much as it's a journalistic tome on the history and current event surrounding memory and subtopics therein. I do recommend the book just for the sheer entertainment of reading how people have done what they've done but as far as a guide goes, you have to get the tips throughout the stories. I would have preferred an upfront discussion of all techniques you can use to improve your memory and then the stories to follow. However, reading the stories the the author reports on and his conclusion regarding how he came to view these memory tools and techniques, I can understand why he went the direction he did with his book (which is a great one).

I just finished Moonwalking with Einstein and found it to be an interesting story about a journalist's self congratulatory pursuit of memory athletics but very, very little on actual techniques. The best part (for me) was two pages on Deliberate Practice. If you want some history on memory competitions - fun read. If you want memory techniques - The Memory Book by Lorayne and Lucas is far superior.

As a history of the author's quest for a memory-challenge championship, the book is mildly entertaining. As a compendium of memory-improving techniques and practices, this book is absolutely USELESS. Perhaps the book's description has changed since I wrote this review, but at the time I purchased it, it was advertised as "cutting-edge science" for improving your memory. Instead, it's basically a 274-page-long "selfie" about what Josh did on his summer vacation, which really wasn't what I was hoping for.

Would’ve preferred a book that goes into detail about mnemonic techniques and strategies. Not a book that briefly mentions 5 or 6 techniques with no detail and rambles on about the memory olympics...

Entertaining, humorous, and surprisingly philosophical. Foer turned a seemingly insignificant brush with mnemonics into an investigation of its history and then, on a more personal level, into a passion that led him to become the US memory champion. From Greek antiquity, through the middle ages, and into the modern era, he charts the meaning and use of human memory. What you learn is surprising and thought-provoking as Foer plumbs the purposes of memory and the influences of reading, the written word, and the ubiquitous external memory devices (e.g, smartphones) we all use today. Aren’t these, after all, crutches for our frail cognitive abilities? Yes, and no, as Foer ably demonstrates. Along the way, we meet the colorful characters, self-promoters, savants, and geeks who populate this fascinating sphere of human activity. My only quibble is that Foer tantalizes us with memory techniques without delivering more details on the specifics of all aspects and applications of the technique. His memory palace is filled with mental images of a moonwalking Einstein (whence the title of the book), but the mechanics of how he associates these person-object-activity groupings with the number, card, or object they represent is beyond my limited creative capacity. Nevertheless, this is highly recommended.

Looking for specific tips and instructions on how to improve my memory, I was quite disappointed. The author gives a history of leaders in the field, rubbing shoulders with memory giants, and even his experience of entering into a contest, but this is not the How To book I was looking for. Maybe that was his point, but it was a waste of time for me.

Review

Baby Loves Spring! Karen Katz. Little Simon, $6.99 (14p) ISBN 978-1-4424-2745-7 One of Katz’s characteristically cherubic babies explores the delights of spring, ready for the inevitable spring shower in a yellow raincoat. Large flaps reveal the answers to questions like, “What is squiggling in the dirt?” (in this case, rows of “wiggly worms” smile at the girl from behind one flap). A fluffy cloud flap shows “big raindrops” as a storm rolls in (to the baby’s delight), and a resultant puddle contains “Funny little frogs! Croak! Croak!” Katz’s crayon accents and cheery collages deliver an uplifting and accessible primer on the season for inquisitive toddlers. --Publishers Weekly, December 12, 2011BABY LOVES SPRING! Author: Katz, Karen Illustrator: Katz, Karen Review Issue Date: July 1, 2012 Online Publish Date: June 13, 2012 Publisher:Simon & Schuster Pages: 14 Price ( Hardcover ): $6.99 Publication Date: January 1, 2012 ISBN ( Hardcover ): 978-1-4424-2745-7 Category: Picture Books A toddler in bright red galoshes and a rubber-duck yellow raincoat splashes through her world. Her yard is her domain. All by herself, the little one peers behind or jumps through the lush outdoors, abetted by sturdy-enough flaps. “What is squiggling in the dirt? / [lift flap] Here are some wiggly worms!” Other flaps offer surprises best viewed from a distance; leaves cover robins in the tree, and the rain falls from behind the cloud. The final spread opens the gate and shows everything uncovered previously. The little tyke’s exuberance is convincingly childlike: “Oh no! Those are big raindrops!” The substantial flaps are clearly identifiable and easy to manipulate for tots just gaining dexterity. The straightforward question-and-answer format invites participation as well. Bright, swirling patterns on butterflies and polka-dot frogs add a gentle whimsy. Companion Baby Loves Summer serves up fun in the sun with the delightful squirt of a hose and the same effortless interactive elements. Cheery characters in bright spring shades usher in the season. We own 13 lift-the-flap Karen Katz books. This one is my least favorite. I just don't like the art or the script."It's summertime! What will Baby see?""What's behind this curtain? Look, it's a big yellow sun!""What could be in the beach bag? These are my flip-flops, sunglasses, and green hat!""What is under Baby's towel? It's my shiny swimming tube." (Note: The swimming tube isn't made with shiny paper like some of the other books. It's a matte red and white polka dot inner tube.)"Who is inside the polka-dot truck? It's the ice cream man with a yummy cone!""Who is buzzing behind the daisies? It's a bunch of busy bees!""Who is hiding behind the tree? It's Mommy with the water hose! I love summer!"If you don't mind owning every Karen Katz book ever, go ahead and buy this one. The little person in your life will probably like it tolerably well. If you are trying to limit your Karen Katz intake, there are better choices. Our top favorites:1. Where is Baby's Belly Button?2. Where is Baby's Pumpkin?3. Where are Baby's Puppy? We also enjoy:Where is Baby's Valentine?Where are Baby's Easter Eggs?Baby Loves Spring!Karen Katz books that grew on me:Baby's Box of Family Fun (It was a good deal for 4 Katz books -- $13.57 bought 11/2012)My then three year old daughter LOVED the stories about Baby's Mommy, Daddy, Grandma, and Grandpa. For a long time my daughter wanted me to read each of them every day, sometimes more than once.

My daughter just turned 1, and these books are her absolute favorite. She loves opening the flaps, says "hi" to the things she finds, and wants to start all over again as soon as she's done. The books are a lot of fun for kids, and I love watching her get excited whenever she finds the book. Luckily, the flaps are durable and have held up well to her "enjoyment" of opening and closing the flaps.

My daughter is obsessed with these books! I've already gotten 3 want to order more. She loves lifting the flaps and it keeps her entertained.

I bought this book for my 2 yr. old niece, who was visiting with us. She loved the little panels that she can open and peek inside. They book was sturdy enough so she couldn't rip it. All in all, she was a happy camper.

My daughter loves these peek-a-boo books! They have taught her so much and are interactive. Quickly building a collection from this author!

My son loves this whole series of books. The flaps are really big so they're easy to turn, and the little short sentences are great. My, now 3 year old, son memorizes them quickly.

I wanted more Karen Katz books but this did not hold the same charm the Where is Baby’s Bellybutton book did, so I returned it.

our 1 year old grandbaby loves books already, and these are colorful and beautifully made and she loves opening the flaps to find cute pics
