My 8 year old read this in one afternoon. It was written in a very clear and engaging way. She was able to explain what hse learned pretty thoroughly, which means to me that it was well written. The book covers the Apollo 11 mission.

I purchased these books (most of the titles in the Step 4 and 5 series) several months ago, but have been giving them out one at a time to my daughter, who is currently in first grade. She loves to read fiction, and has devoured many of the chapter books I've purchased for her or checked out of the library. I was looking for an interesting series of non-fiction books for her, and these seemed like the perfect introduction to the genre.There are lots of illustrations and archival photographs covering the moon launch in 1969. The appeal of this reader lies mainly in the way the information is condensed to suit the needs of young readers - informative, yet not overly descriptive nor steeped in jargon. Also, the illustrations on each page motivate young readers, especially visual learners like my daughter.The Step 5 readers are described as "ready for chapters, grades 2-4", though children who are younger and are at an advanced reading level will find these books interesting and suitably challenging as well.

The books are falling apart with their very first use in my classroom. Half of them have pages that are falling out and I am having to tape pages back in place and hope I can get one more year out of them. They are junk! Don't buy them!

My nephew keeps telling us he's passionate about reading and learning and this book was one of the first books that started him on that passion. He is a big fan of space and the galaxies, he really enjoyed this book and wrote a book report on it.

Bought this for my 7 year old grandson. He read it immediately and liked it a great deal. It contained just enough information for someone his age to absorb. Very good informational book for youn readers.

This was bought as a gift for my grandchildren. I was able to review it with them; it was a fun time.

He needs smaller bites of information which is more directly to the point. This is kind of wordy for us and goes off subject to Jules Verne's book and early crack pot ideas on how to get to the moon. Maybe an older kid would be interested in that anecdotal information. But it doesn't work for us.We read tons of Easy readers. Most of them are very good. Some of the level 4 books are like this one. Lots of good information but too much extra. I wish they would make books on the same subject matter but more at level 2 or 3. Unfortunately all the good informational books are level 4. There is a big leap between level 3 and level 4 books. The difference seems like there should be another level in between these two. We will save this one until he gets older and can appreciate the extra info in it. The first and last chapters are on subject so we read these for now.All that said we still love all these books. I appreciate the levels for learning to read.

Your space-fan kid will absolutely love this book. Its great for the 1st to at least 3rd grade age range. It will teach them a lot about the journey to the moon.

These are great books for children learning to read and for children who don't like to read "long: books. Also these books have a ton of information in them that keep my children interested on reading to the next page. I find that my children will read these books over and over again.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Stephen E. Lucas is Professor of Communication Arts and Evjue-Bascom Professor in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he has taught since 1972. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his master's and doctorate degrees from Penn State University. Professor Lucas has been recognized for his work as both a scholar and a teacher. His first book, Portents of Rebellion: Rhetoric and Revolution in Philadelphia, 1765-1776, received the Golden Anniversary Award of the National Communication Association in 1977 and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. His major articles include "The Schism in Rhetorical Scholarship" (1981), "The Renaissance of American Public Address: Text and Context in Rhetorical Criticism" (1988), "The Stylistic Artistry of the Declaration of Independence” (1990), and “The Rhetorical Ancestry of the Declaration of Independence” (1998), for which he received the Golden Anniversary Monograph Award of the National Communication Association. His most recent book is Words of a Century: The Top 100 American Speeches, 1900-1999 (2009). Professor Lucas has received a number of teaching awards, including the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching at the University of Wisconsin and the National Communication Association’s Donald Ecroyd Award for Outstanding Teaching in Higher Education. This book is absolute garbage. At least 95% of it is filler content, and most of it has absolutely nothing to do with public speaking. The last chapter that I read for a homework assignment went into how to use Google or a library to do research. I have to suspect that most of the positive reviews for this are fake, because this is just painful to read. The actual useful content of the book could have been condensed down to 2 or 3 pages. It amazes me that people can make so much money overcharging college students for garbage like this.

Great seller, fast delivery and easy purchase, BUT SUCH an AWFUL textbook!!TIP google the PDF of the previous version and find a free version- nearly EXACTLY the same- one added chapter in the new version, save your money.Not something I would want to keep around- horrific very very simple writing, and a book that glorifies it's profession constantly. I.e. some form of the sentence "The greatest profession you can ever pursue is in communication," starts off every chapter.There are multiple ENTIRE chapters where the author outlines how the best profession you can pursue is in communications. Also the online companion speeches by UW Students are constantly factually inaccurate, for example the speech on illiteracy rates actually cites population statistics for 1960, when the speech was delivered in 2011. The research is embarrassing.If you have a class that requires this book, unless you desperately need it for your major- I'd pass. All of the educational content in this book could be condensed down to ten pages. Instead of this textbook a small reference guide, similar to a "Strunk and White" quick tips type book would save students the major headache of reading this.This text was long winded, filled with dry condescendingly simple writing, and was painfully boring. PASS. If your stuck with it and have assigned reading, immediately just skip to the chapter summaries, don't waste your time actually reading, you won't learn anything.

There are quizlets for every chapter in this book, the entire semester I took this class I didn't open the book a single time and passed every quiz.

The author does a great job of explaining things in a way that is easily readable and applicable. I do wish that the value of the book matched the content quality. At the price of $103.24 at the time of this review, the book is way overpriced. The book is 300 pages, but this is only because of 3 inch margins and many unnecessary pictures (see product pictures). In actuality, the content is about 150 pages. In summation, the quality is good, however the price truly diminishes the merit of the book. If, like me, you are required to purchase this, you may be better off buying it used or renting it. The book is a quick read, so you may consider purchasing it/renting it with a classmate so that the price is truly worth it. You will be able to share it and each read the whole thing in just a few days.

The item arrived as a paperback when I arrived the open leaf. It also arrived with tons of stickers I was unable to get off without ripping the book. In the big picture, I am satisfied because customer service responded quickly and offered to ship me the correct book or provide a partial refund. For a book I will only use for one semester and may never open again afterwards, it is a great deal.

Needed it for class - only to find out that many colleges apparently have versions made specifically for their schools and thus the worksheets included are varied, as well as the content on the pages. Ended up being a total waste of money.This and the main book itself, The Art of Public Speaking, both suffer from massive amounts of blank area in order to increase page count and charge more money, despite being made cheaply. On the plus side, the textbook includes massive amounts of photographs of random people speaking, whether celebrity, politician, or random speakers at events. Captions tend to be along the lines of, "This is so and so speaking at this event. Wow. What a speaker!" So you get ripped on both the empty space and unnecessary photos.Avoid if at all possible ~ heck, pool together to buy a new book and then make photo copies of the worksheets with classmates. These books are worthless other than for meeting the requirement for graduation.

The reader faces a machine gun volley of facts. It seems that just about every appointment, every battle and every dispute is presented - and since he was undeniably a 'colossus', there are very many of these. What fails to emerge from this is a revealing insight into the character of the man himself. He was a talented writer, a compelling orator and a brilliant general, but this will have been known to the reader from the outset. About a quarter of the way through this very long book, I got used to this approach and hung on, hoping for a great deal more information about the aspects of Caesar's life in which I was most interested: the relationship with Cleopatra and the assassination. Alas, though, whilst the style did not change - it was still a machine gun volley of facts - my response did. It came home to me at this point that what I craved was analysis and this is the vital ingredient missing from the book. I am much better informed about the events in his life than I had been, but I do not feel much insight into the character of the man.

I love reading on my Kindle. But, I strongly suggest buying the printed version of this book rather than the Kindle version. The Kindle version did not have bookmarks to skip from one chapter to the next, it did not have links between footnotes and the text, and it did not have links between the index and the text. The index and notes use page numbers that are meaningless in this Kindle version. The only part with links was the Table of Contents. Basically, you can read the book straight through, but you cannot easily find something particular if you want to do so.Having said that, I really think you should actually buy this book (in printed form) if you care to learn about Julius Caesar. The research, details, and writing were great. The author explicitly stated when details were known, estimated, or merely speculated. And, the bases for estimations and speculations were given. For example, much of Julius Caesar's early life is not known explicitly. So, the author speculated many details based on what would have been expected of a young man at his social level who was to pursue a public career.So, buy it. But, buy the printed book.

I'm a relative novice on Roman history, and this is the first book I picked up to brush up on the period. It proved to be an excellent choice. Goldsworthy writes with a wonderful narrative flair, bringing to life the story of this remarkable figure. Although among the most celebrated, or vilified, figures in Western history, this biography constantly reminds us that Caesar's rise to power and eventual fall were never inevitable; his early career was unexceptional and it was not until after his tenure as consul that he began a course that would lead him to tower above all his contemporaries in the historical record. Even then, he was the clear junior partner in the first triumvirate, lagging behind the (then) better know Crassus and Pompey. Goldworthy's account of Caesar's military triumphs in Gaul is lively and engaging, and he makes a strong case for the general reliability of Caesar's Commentaries while also pointing out episodes where we do well to view them critically. His coverage of the civil war with Pompey, especially the events leading to it, felt a bit truncated. I would have liked a little more exploration of the political situation in Rome that caused Caesar to take the incredibly drastic step that he did of waging war against the Republic. His discussion of the fatal crossing of the Rubicon, however, does an excellent job of cutting through the mythology while still conveying the very genuine drama of the occasion. Given the short time Caesar actually spent as dictator, and the lamentable lack of sources that we have for his thought process at the time, Goldsworthy admits that his discussion of Caesar's intentions once he achieved ultimate power necessarily relies heavily on conjecture. I found his characterization convincing though. I'm probably the only one complaining that this book was too short, but I actually would have liked to see the epilogue on portrayals of Caesar in popular culture be much longer; that could be another book in itself. Overall, this highly engaging narrative should appeal to scholars and general readers alike, and has left me searching for Goldsworthy's other works.

This book is phenomenal. If you are so much as considering going into law school, I highly recommend this book. It outlines the theory of law education, how to do well on the LSATs, how to apply to law schools, how to pick one, how to finance one etc - all helpful if you are just starting your journey into applying. The book then goes into the hornbooks needed to get the most out of your 1L courses, if gives descriptions of the required 1L courses, and how best to study for them. It gives tips for finding housing, getting supplies, studying, all the little things that make a huge difference when you have no time to think about them once the school year has begun.This is a comprehensive, all-inclusive 1L experience book - and an entertaining, and highly informative read.

I cannot think of a graduate school experience that is more mythologized than the first year of law school (in the worst possible way), and as an incoming 1L, I sought to familiarize myself with what to expect as best as I could. Mr. Miller's book not only provides an extremely thorough rendering of what happens at every step of the law school experience, but he imbues his writing with a candor and perspective that was extremely refreshing to read. He was neither hyperbolic nor dismissive about the trials and tribulations of law school, and it is important for incoming students to see this sort of balance reflected in discussions of what law school will be like (since most of my peers tend to swing towards either end of the spectrum).I plan to give a copy of this book to all of the future 1Ls in my life, and even though I am only a week into my first year, I know I am much better off having read this book from cover to cover.

As a 0L (soon to be 1L), this book seems to have a lot of valuable information to prepare before and during law school. It is a pretty comprehensive book which is divided in several parts (applying/preparing as a 0L/your first year/second year/third year). The book talks about how to make the most of your learning experience and give tips regarding exam taking, preparing for interviews, getting into law review and/or getting internships/externships/clerkships. It also covers how to choose the best school for you, financial aid, and many other aspects of the law school experience. I have gone through the whole book once, and I plan to review each specific part (for example, this summer I will re-read the 0L part of the book) and in August I will revisit the 1L portion. The author gives a lot of advice regarding preparation, and although it is a lot of information, I am pretty sure that it will prove useful soon. I recommend the book as it provides condensed insight on many aspects of the legal education.

This book is very honest. It is thorough and complete and it really helped me decide NOT to go back to Law School. I appreciated the raw honesty of the authors and found the book incredibly helpful. I'm glad I was able to read this BEFORE I spent a fortune in time and money on Law School. [Not to say that Law School isn't a good fit for someone else - this book will definitely help you determine if it is a good fit for you!].

If you are considering law school, or are already here, this book will tell you what to expect and short cuts to make your time more efficient. It also asks the tough questions that you want to avoid but are better off answering early and going to school knowing what you want.

It is indeed useful, particularly if this is your first book on law school and you are interested in a very general overview.PERSONAL SUGGESTION (*warining* personal opinion)My strongest suggestion for those interested in law school is this: take one or two years off prior to entering law school to 1) adequately prepare and 2) make a determination whether or not you *really* want to do it. Whether you enroll into a graduate program, work, relax, explore, or engage in charitable activities - give yourself some time to pursue your varied interests. If you ever wanted to start a company, see a particular part of the world, or just take some time to think .. I highly suggest you do that prior to entering law school. If you just completed or are about to complete an undergraduate or graduate program, you might not have this opportunity again. Purge those urges and pursue those interests now while you have a chance.HIGHLIGHTSThe book provides useful information regarding law school from financing your education to law school etiquette (share your class notes; do not boast about anything; avoid gossip; and never discuss grades). Furthermore, the author provides useful insights on applying for jobs to obtaining internships. Many topics are addressed in the book, and I appreciated the perspectives of former law students to hiring partners at variously sized firms. I do not necessarily agree with the author's suggestion on case briefing, however. I think it would be tedious and time-consuming to read cases using variously colored highlighters. It is better to use simply a pen and underline relevant material.SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONThe information in the book lacks depth but makes up for it for its vast breadth concerning prior to law school, while in law school (year 1, 2, and 3) and after law school. I am confident that most people who have an interest in possibly attending law school will find the book useful.
