I just finished reading this recount of the birth and maturation of the blues and learned much about my favorite blues artists and others with whom I was not all that familiar.Having grown up a white boy in Kentucky and being inundated with early rock and roll in the late 50's and early 60's, I also managed to stumble across some late night blues stations from the Delta when local stations signed off the air around midnight and longer distance stations would make their way into "foreign" country and I quickly developed an appreciation for some of the artists. However, as their sophistication and amplification become more common in later years, I learned to appreciate them even more. The author has done a good job of showing how the early pioneers influenced their successors who went on to contribute to the creation of some of the best rock and roll and blues-influenced groups and individual performers in the world, such as Albert King, B. B. King, Bob Margolin, Elvin Bishop, Eric Clapton, John Lee Hooker, Pinetop Perkins, the Rolling Stones and of course, Muddy Waters as well as others who unfortunately never had the same success.I've been fortunate to spend a lot of time working in Greenville, Clarksdale, Helena and other Delta area towns or crossroads communities during the past fifty years and wish now I could have read this book when I was first started traveling through the area in 1968.This is a good primer for young, budding music lovers or seasoned blues aficionados as myself.
You might think that there will be more here than you really need to know about The Blues, but once you start you'll be hooked. Palmer has written The Book on Blues, and his style and enthusiasm and deep understanding will get into your system.
Getting ready for a trip to Mississippi, this book was an EXCEPTIONAL preparation for that trip. If you love blues/rock & roll/Jazz, you have to read this book.
This has to be THE DEFINITIVE blues history! What a treasure of priceless interviews and critique by an astonishing writer.
gave as a gift...but person I gave it too was excited about it & it's supposed to be a definitive history of blues & its culture. There is a DVD t accompany it.
Palmer provides a judgement free history. At times the book flashes between characters and locations so rapidly that the temporal context is difficult, but in the end you appreciate the level of action the arena was experiencing. McKinley Morganfield is a recurring subject to a much higher degree than any of the other players, but it serves to reflect the man's centrality to the period.Thoroughly enjoyable, informative and enlightening.
Musical history. Enjoy the analysis of one of the mayor professors of the Blues history and appreciation.
As good as it gets! I loved it!!!
