While my son was in rehab for herion addiction I was busy. Busy with family therapy,meetings, visiting him,trying to make sure his life was safe when he got out. But I had no idea what to do with all of the information I was given. Everything changed...who I thought he was, who I thought I was. This book gave me a lot of information on how to deal with everything we would be going through. Try to buy the book before your family member gets out of rehab so you are prepared. My son has been clean for 4 months and 7 days. Every day is a blessing. He is alive. This is a story that can happen to anyone. My best of wishes to you.I just wanted to add to my report. My son has been heroin free for a little over a year now. He is happy and confident. Not the scared little boy he was when he went into inpatient treatment. I feel blessed. I hope for the best for anyone else in this lifes journey...
My spouse is a newly recovering addict and I have gone through every emotion in the book (shock, despair, grief, shame, anger, panic, fear, anxiety, you name it) and Beverly Conyers has gone through it too & 'gets it' and offers real stories, insight and clear suggestions to help yourself -- first and foremost -- and also how you can foster growth for your loved one without doing too much. What a great book -- I read almost the whole book in one sitting. You need this if you are dealing with addiction in your family. It helps you remember that your feelings are typical and even normal. It gives you hope, clarity and peace. As Conyers discusses, this whole process, although scary and painful at times, can really open your eyes spiritually, as it has for me. The 'words of inspiration and support' section of the book is great, too; I like this one from Eleanor Roosevelt: "You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror, I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do."
Very helpful in navigating the difficulty time that is recovery from addiction for family members. During this difficult time, as family members, it is so hard to know what it is you should be doing. This book gives you firsthand experiences which helps you to understand your role in the process of recovery. As a family member. my expectations were high following treatment, not fully understanding that it was only just beginning. This book helps in maneuvering through this emotional time for everybody.
This was an enjoyable read and helped me get through some personal questions in regards to a close family member that was recently found out having an addiction. It was very encouraging especially coming from different perspectives throughout
I learned quite a bit from this book on how to deal with my son who has a drug addiction. It gave me the truth about how sometimes families expect too much from a recently recovering addict. It was sad to know how sometimes it takes many times falling back into the addiction before they finally quit for good. It gave examples of families who have dealt with this and the heartbreak that the addiction causes the entire family. I would highly recommend reading this book if you have a family member suffering from any type of addiction.
I can't say enough good things about this book. I was struggling with my husband. I didn't understand his problem at all. This book helped me understand him and the challenges facing him. It also helped me deal with things because the family goes through the challenge as well in a different way. I learned how to love him in a different way and not put so much pressure on him. I loved him with detachment, something I never thought I could do until this book! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!! There isn't much out there for the families of addicts.
I read the first book "Addict In The Family" by Beverly and it was one of the most helpful resources I have found but then this book is the sequel and a must read again. These two resources could change your outlook for you and your loved one who is an addict. Read it...
This book was recommended to me by an abuse treatment specialist and I must say it made a tremendous difference in how I view many things concerning abuse of drugs & alcohol. I am so very glad to have had the opportunity to read this book and to learn so much about this horrible problem that affects almost every family in some way. If you need to better understand a friend, a family member or just stay informed, I highly recommend this book.
