This is a good book on the topic. I needed it for a college course (Rutgers University Newark). It is rather thorough, but seems to be more a high school or junior college level text than a bachelor-level text. The course was not, thanks to a very competent, gifted and thorough professor.
This edition has become a classic secondary school text written by two people linked to agriculture and horticulture who have worked for decades with student learners. John C. George
It has all of the basics that I never learned. It is a bit deep, but that is it's beauty. You just have to learn to read and how the pictures apply.
I first encountered this book in the 5th edition, which was ok. This edition, the 6th, has been greatly updated. There are more tables throughout i.e. pH leves on plants, insects that harm or help the garden, etc. This book is by no means exhaustive, so don't delude yourself into thinking that it will tell you everything you need to know about plants and horticultures. This book is however an excellent resource and will help to point the user in the right directions. Topics include but arent' limited to: Plant propigation (by seeds, spliting bulbs, hard and softwood cuttings, etc.), introduction to greenhousing, vergetable gardening, certain fruits i.e. strawberries, raspberries, and houseplants. Like i said, great 'over-all-information' book.
great color pictures, information content could be more, book a little pricey for a textbook with low amount of detail info. For the beginners it is a good start. Myself who is more advanced, sees that more technical information is more important than pictures.
