Okay - Rosemary's Baby is one of my favorite novels of all time, I got to be friends with its author, and the film is one of my favorite films of all time, and one I can watch two or three times a year. I saw it on its opening day and thought it brilliant and certainly then and now think it's the best adaptation of a novel to film ever done. It's perfectly cast, perfectly written, perfectly directed, perfectly edited and photographed, and the production and costume design is as good as it gets.I have the Bob Willoughby book of photographs, of course, and many of those photos appear in this new book and they're great. The making of part I wish were longer and more detailed, but while I've heard most of the stories before, it's well presented here and you get a good idea of the players, their egos, and it is, at times, like you're right there. There are a few weird things - several sentences where letters get scrunched together, calling "Planet of the Apes" "THE Planet of the Apes" (it's correct earlier in the book and wrong in the Awards section) and little stuff. But it's a handsome book and anyone who loves the film will want to have it.
I would call this a coffee table book due to its size. Paper quality is very good and photos are clear and crisp and most are big photos although they are all in black and white. About 1/3 of the book has a narrative - talks about the author of the book, Ira Levin, and how he decided to write the book; how the book then became a movie; about selection of the main actors; and gives some information about key scenes. The remaining 2/3 of the book is only photographs - taken by the still photographer hired for the movie. In purchasing this book, I admit that I was hoping it would be in the same vein as the one put out about The Godfather movie. That book goes into tons of detail which made it so fascinating. It took me less than 1 hour to read this book about Rosemary's Baby and even much less time to go page-by-page to view the photos. When I finished, I was left wanting much more and didn't feel like I learned a lot of new stuff about how this movie was made.
A great history of a classic film.
Beautifully produced book with some great photos. I wouldn't have thought there were enough Rosemary Baby fans to have made such a book financially worthwhile.
