I've been a user of "The World Almanac" since the 1980s. Purchasing a paperback copy of this essential reference tool has been for me practically a rite of passage in January of each year.This year I decided to try a Kindle version of "The World Almanac." I must state that the content of the 2015 edition is a good as ever... news, sports, and world events are current up to the second week of December, 2014. Included are complete U.S. mid-term election results. All information is timely and accurate, as one might expect.The problem with the ebook version "The World Almanac 2015" is that doesn't adapt itself well to the Kindle format. Pages with regular text look fine, but pages with tables on them are very much hit-or-miss. Some tables show up with nice, neat, properly formatted columns that can be read easily, while others appear in minuscule, almost unreadable fonts and columns that are not aligned properly. The maps section is a total mess. The maps are all turned sideways, and the fonts are so small they're unreadable. This problem is especially pronounced in my Kindle for Windows 8.1 app."The World Almanac and Book of Facts" is truly an outstanding reference work, essential for anyone who wants information at their fingertips. However, the Kindle version of this book just doesn't make the grade. My advice: Buy the "hard copy."
As great of a resource as the Internet can sometimes be, there is still nothing like personally owning and browsing through a single, authoritative, well-organized, tangible compendium of essential information about our world. It is easy to get lost in all the information on the Internet, but browsing through the "World Almanac" can be an enjoyable, educational, linear-path "guided tour" of much of the most important and relevant information about many aspects of the world.It is thoroughly updated this year as it is every year (and up-to-date through early November with 2014 election results and World Series results), but there are no major changes in the type of content included compared to last year. Given that it is pretty close to what I would consider an optimal use of 1008 pages for a concise collection of general facts about the world (with somewhat of a U.S.-centric perspective), and that these days most major changes made by reference works remove valuable information in favor of new dumbed-down features, I view the consistency in the World Almanac's content as a good thing.
Get this every year and have done so annually for more than six decades. As a writer, lawyer, private investor, and independent businessman, I use it daily and cannot imagine functioning without it. Same info now is available online but this is a quicker and easier to use reference work. Could do with some of the information that is no longer included and without some of the stuff that has been added to modernize the volume . . . but then, that's the view of an old curmudgeon.
This is like the usual World Almanac of yesteryear, but with adverts on steriods! I felt like I bought a lot of ads. However there is still a lot of basic information in this book, so it was not all bad. Would I buy it again? Perhaps. It was a gift for an autistic individual that loves to find factual information. Hopefully he will find it between the numerous ads.
I wouldn't be caught dead without this book. I have bought one every year since 1981. It is indispensable for almost any type of research or just for looking up general information. There's no other book like it. I would say it's the most important book in my library. And it is worth far more that you pay for it. If you haven't bought one, it's time you started.
A dangerous book! Once you pick it up and start flicking through the pages absorbing the unlimited lists of facts and figures, you won't be able to put it down. Love this type of book! An invaluable compilation of statistics, some of which you may not be particularly interested in but find absolutely fascinating, and endless information regarding world history and affairs. An indispensable reference work of 1000 pages in a lightweight, easy to access, sturdily bound trade paperwork.
I am completely satisfied with my purchase. When online access fails or you can't find a site which can answer a simple question (simply), this is where I turn. What really made this year special for me was the year in sports photos. For the first time they had a picture of the Seattle Seahawks in their Super Bowl XLVIII victory! My favorite sections include Celestial Events and Notable Tall Buildings. I look forward to these updated sections every year. Working with the almanac year after year has made me a smarter and more well-rounded individual who can keep a conversation afloat.
My twelve year old son loves facts books and this was a gift for him. It is a very well made, huge book stuffed with all sorts of info. It will keep him busy for a long time. The information is current and relevant to him so he enjoys sharing it and even bringing it in the car for trivia questions. We had older versions of this book in paperback but highly recommend the hard cover for wear and tear. Makes a very impressive gift.
