Planning an extensive driving tour thru Provence, and I needed a large-scale PAPER map so that I could easily highlight place names and write notes. This is a scale of 1/200,000 which is perfect, as its large enough to show much detail. Beautifully done with mileage, travel times, important places to see, and locations of gas stations.

This map and the other Michelin maps that we ordered for regions of France are very detailed and very well done. But, to find your way through the back roads, a GPS is far better. The GPS provides warning of how far away the turns are, and there were a lot of then. We would not have traveled as extensively through the smaller communities and out-of-the-way places with only maps and the traveling that we did would have been far more frustrating with just the maps. I have always liked maps and thought of the GPS a nonessential but am now an enthusiast.Some of the reviews mentioned that the maps were large and awkward in the car but we had no problem in that regard.

Nice map, but was a map of several countries, including France. Had wished for map of France only with several inserts of cities of France. It was a nice reference - hard to tell toll roads, ended up using map as a reference and our GPS more. Easy drive from Zurich to Dion, then looping to Annecy (lovely town). Passed thru several small downtowns of (about 4 American blocks) towns. No stop signs, nor lights, just round circles (round a bouts), GPS helped a lot - many towns listed future towns on direction arrows - which is where this map helped! Hit a construction in France, ended up a rural hill - so GPS nor map helped, glad I caught a glimpse of road before GPS switched to new route. But if you get lost, most roads loop back to main road. Also if use nontoll roads plan extra 2 hours for longer legs of trip (As in Zurich to Dion, France). Also - on the GPS non toll route - HARDLY any cars on road - Awesome!! Tip: Always keep a 1/2 tank - gas stations hard to find, non in 1 block towns (ha), and several were closed. Also suggest carry cash - had hard time getting code to take on our credit cards with chips at stations. Also many have diesel, so make sure you study type needed. I believe we used something with a 95e in it. "Gasal is Diesel - and green handle is what you want. But ask someone to be safe. Hints - check with hotel on free downtown parking hours. Get the smallest car you can - many parking spots were tight- not unusual to see side windows pulled in, and leave room at back if back in, just in case person next to you is close in garage and you need to climb via trunk to get into car. ha Another hint: heard 2 horror stories of Eurocar rental - incorrect size for large family- they had to come back the next day, another family had to go to 3 DIFFERENT Places to track down their rental car. Most rental cars are stick shift.

The map is fine and was marginally helpful on our recent trip. However, as other have commented previous on the Michelin maps - it is huge! Very difficult to manage in a car. Parts of the area covered are represented on both sides of the map, so that is confusing, too. Don't know if I'll use this style map again.

This detailed road map saved us from getting lost daily, during a recent trip to Brittany, especially because cellular service on our otherwise smart-phone was non-existent in many small villages and back roads. Well worth buying ahead of time!

We always buy maps for our intended vacation destinations months before the trip. We study the entire region and along with guide books choose one particular area as a focal point. The Michelin Regional Maps are extremely useful in helping us make this decision and to see the interesting sites within short distances for us to fan out and explore. After our daily trips, my husband highlights the routes that we have explored and the map then becomes a keepsake. Love them.

This should be labeled western Loire Valley, only. Cuts off Saumur and barely covers Tours. I recommend Michelin maps, but wish I didn't overlook some previous comments that mentioned that this map does NOT cover the entire Loire Valley.

Useful in planning our trip. Disappointing that it only covers the western portion of the valley. I needed to order the map for Central France to plan for our trip. Has good detail, with route names and driving distances. Large to use in the car--but most maps are if not folded to reveal smaller areas.

The book is lovely, though I had hoped for a little more instructional content instead of it being more like a reference book. It's a nice addition to my fiber work library, though!

Wonderful book! Great bits of info on each entry, some are fascinating. Beautiful photos. If you love birds and love needlework, this book is for you. I only wish there were a few more "contemporary" art entries. Great collector book. Next book will cover animals. I look forward to it!

The story gently but clearly emphasizes the truth he giving spirit of Christmas. I am Catholic, but some parents may be glad to hear there is no religious message. Just a very sweet and generous moral.

Very nice story--engaging with beautiful pictures. Encourages giving and generosity. My grandchildren liked that it was "so long" and that they unwrapped presents in the story.

I bought this for my 2yr old, but she's too young for it. This activity book has word search, mazes, word scrambles, and lots of reusable vinyl stickers. It's a great book, I put it away for next Christmas.

It has nice, colored pictures and my small children really like this book. We enjoyed reading it together this Christmas.

Reading Franklin's Christmas to my son, made him realize that he is fortunate enough to donate some of his unused toys to the poor.

No-fuss classy meals, using locally available fish, shellfish, & seaweeds.This book is a perfect combination of: SIMPLE recipes, which include the little shortcuts that make them EASY, but also the important details that can turn two ingredients into a 'fancy-restaurant' tasting dish. The author has developed these original recipes over many seasons of commercial fishing & sailing his own small boat in SE Alaska, & he discusses the health implications not just of the locally found fish, shellfish, & seaweeds, but also the oils & herbs & cooking methods that bring out the best in each kind of food, with separate sections on adapting various ethnic traditions (Russian, Scandinavian, Filipino, Mexican, Cajun, Thai, etc) to cooking whatever fresh seafood is at hand. Well written & entertaining as well.

My brother and I spent our youngest years in Hawaii (Barbers Point) and Alaska (Annette Island), as our father was a USCG search & rescue helicopter pilot and his station changed every few years.The characters that we met in Alaska, the stories they told, and the wonderful food they prepared come back through the writings of Mr. Bayliss' intriguing cookbook.Well done. Fun read. Thanks for the memories and he great eats!Highly recommended.

The original yet practical recipes and wonderfully weird illustrations make this cookbook unique. Even those of us in the lower 48 are looking at fish in a whole new way. Randy Bayliss brings his life's experience in Alaska, his oddball humor, and his abundant culinary skills into the kitchen for us to savor.The only problem is that you might get so interested in the reading that you forget you were planning to cook dinner. No biggie: LIFE'S A FISH is well worth the time spent chuckling.

This cookbook is not only full of wonderful recipes and facts, it is also extremely entertaining. One feels as if they have been welcomed into the colorful Alaskan community by opening this book, as well as learning the uses and history of herbs and the best way to cook fish, among other things. The `Day of Honey' is neither a cookbook nor a travel book: it is a free of stereotypes journey through the cultures of the Middle East, from Lebanon to Iraq and back to New York city. In a very tensed world, facing wars and violence, food is the only recipe for peace and dialogue. It is a book that should be included in the list of the compulsory bibliography of any diplomat ready to enter the real world of wars and peace between the nations. Being able to eat is part of the basic survival, but sharing the food is the art of the conversation between the cultures. The dialogue around the table goes far beyond the global level and focus on the very person and human communication: if you love your children you give them food good food. If you want a future for them, you plant the seeds of the new harvest and do your best for avoiding as much as possible the possibility of avoiding the causes of destruction of your harvest. It could be life threatening effort to try changing a society manipulated by war thugs and fanatic leaders, but at least you can hope that when the war is over you do not forget how to broke bread around the dinner table. This could be more available for Lebanon whose South was and is extensively used as a war area by the terrorist Hizbullah who does not put any price on the life of their own people.Besides the good writing, the Day of Honey is a wise lesson in public diplomacy, but also a lesson of good taste and good food. Honestly, from the beginning to the end of the book, I was all the time hungry and ready to taste a fresh pita and some good hummus. I finished the book just in time for getting ready to prepare one of the recipes included at the end of the volume.

Cielzadlo professes to be a journalist, but she is really a philosopher and playwrite. Her characters are real people she knows, but we all know them as people we knowwell wherever we live and whomever we are. Remakably is Umm Hassane who is familiar in any family or a frustrating friend, anywhere in the human race.I laugh out loud at her words on paper, because she is so universally outlandish! Mohamad Bazzi, her loveable husband, plays a strong steady hand for the smart, curious, almost fearless, foodie author. Mohamed tells her, "The war would never end..you ended it yourself," The author finds an inner light in almost everyone in the midst of the carnage or war. She finds paradise on Mutanabbe Street and cuisine in Shabbandar. You will want want to join her. Beautiful people ultimately must leave the wreckage of war to save their soul. They must take with them the poetry, cuisine and culture, the humor and literature and shared memories. Will war never end as Mohamad claims? Can we feast with our fellow man and laugh at their humor? Can we join them for a drink and have a chat? Is "fast food" the real weapon of mass destruction, replacing the aromatic stovetop, fireplace, tabletop dressed with fresh and cooked creations in the company of friends and family? You read Annia and wish for world peace!

Really enjoyed many aspects of this book - the way she made Beirut come alive (a city I have never been to), the recipes in the back (there are a few I will try), her character writing (the MIL is a true princess; I'm surprised she didn't cause a divorce), the lovely sentences, etc...but most of all, I like the way her story reminded me a lot of some dear Palestinian friends (theLebanese and Palestinian cultures arenot dissimilar.)One large gap in the narrative that I found annoying, however, is that the reader never tells us anything about the years when her interest in food developed, presumably the years spent in upstate NY working as a waitress. She makes certain that we know about her Greek heritage, and her homeless childhood (I.e. she is not some elite "foody"), but nothing at all about the restaurant background behind the story. And this seems a little more disingenuous when she admits to being in the Middle East as a freelancer who didn't even earn enough to pay for an apartment - in other words, she was over there as awife "with a talent and opportunity". Restaurant work was a big part of her real career; it was disappointing not tobe able to read about it at all.

This is a well written edifying book that is also pure joy to read. I agree with the other reviewers who gave it a 5 and will not repeat their already good summaries. I married a foreigner and I've traveled and lived abroad and I appreciate her objective compassion, good sense, and balance in entering other cultures. I love food and think it central to social relationships as well as approaching a culture. While you learn about Iraq or Lebanon, you are entertained with humor and references to food that make you feel a sensual delight. This book is a gem. I just wrote to my book club recommending that we read it, confident that we will have such fun sharing our reactions. And you always have to laugh. This lady really is focused on food. In situations where most of us would be too scared to think about eating, she always circles back to her appetite! A metaphor for an appetite for life!

I loved this book - couldn't put it down. The positive reviews say it all - Anna Ciezadlo is a gifted writer, an alert reporter, a courageous young woman and the recipes included are a bonus."Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out." Without giving away the stories she relates, I recommend buying this book and preparing for a few hours of adventure in the Middle East 2003-2011. Her reflections on Beirut and Lebanon are outstanding. Learning to combine her passion for food and honest reporting, she uses some humor, allows us into her family life, and will keep you riveted thru all 358 pages. The glossary, and select bibliography which includes food websites is valuable in understanding Arabic and food enjoyed by middle eastern countries.

I have served on numerous non-profit boards while either being employed by a large US company or running my own small company. This book is good at pushing stale boards who know they're stale and want to change into fertile areas of meaningful activity. It even has some "how to's" at the end that the authors refer to as "parlor games", but such things work. It is a fast read, but one needs to re-read it a 2nd time to get the flow, and I'm not sure I have it down yet. My complaints are: 1) the book is overly erudite, academic, pedagogical. Too much like it was written for other scholars to critique. I wish the authors would have told stories about their own board experiences to humanize the concepts. 2)Many of the labels and much of their invented terminology, such as "cues and clues", "fuzzy front end", "sense-making", and in particular "generative leadership" are almost invented words. A little more common language and basic definitions would have helped. If you look up "generative", it is the adjective form of generate, which is defined as bring into existence, produce, engender. Somehow, those terms all come off as consultant-speak. The concepts seem right, but one almost needs to wrestle it to the ground before digesting the meaning. Heavy slogging for a lowly board member. Needs a bit more Hemingway and less Faulkner.

Governance as Leadership was a great book in looking at how to constructively build a more effective board.I read this for a class on Vestries and Church Governance. This book really helped break down the main modes of governance so that I could more constructively look at what is necessary to make more effective conversations. The break-down of the fiduciary, Strategic and Generative models was really great in looking at how these types of boards thrive with their strengths, as well as how this can hinder a boards abilities to govern well and roundly. Outlining these traits I think is really nice in being able to identify the strength of your board and vestry, while also looking forward to what you can include and work on to build your board.I thought this book was really important and effective in looking how to reframe how a board views its work for the nonprofit.

It's good from the stand point that all the pertinent information is there.But it is dry, dry, dry.....difficult to keep reading except for the fact thatI needed the information. It was a little 'college textbook' ish.

I found this book to be a breath of fresh air. It offers a new way of looking at nonprofit boards, in a relatively short, easy to read manner. There is a wealth of information designed to help nonprofit boards of directors become more effective. Unfortunately, existing approaches have been less than successful with most boards. This book identifies the problem as one of purpose rather than performance.The book identifies three modes that boards of directors can operate in: the traditional fiduciary mode, the strategic mode and the generative mode. The authors emphasize the importance of encouraging board members to engage in generative thinking. Engaging board members in this way makes their work more meaningful and satisfying, while at the same time benefiting the organization through more creative, committed leadership. It suggests signs to look for to identify opportunities for generative thinking.Another interesting new concept discussed in the book is considering directors as a form of "working capital". This is further broken down into intellectual capital, reputational capital, political capital and social capital. Again, this new framework for looking at what board members have to offer increases the opportunities for them to make meaningful contributions to the organization.

Tends to be a little dry and theoretical but really an excellent and thought-provoking book. It's helping one of the boards I serve on get past some issues. If you are looking for anecdotes, quick fixes, or ice breakers, keep looking - this would not be the book for you.
