I have read about amnesia patient H.B. (Henry Molaison) for a long time and was very interested when the psychologist who was able to work with him for over 4 decades would be writing a biography of him. I have cognitive memory issues of my own and thought if I could read about how he compensated for his missing memory to live to over 80 years-old, it could be beneficial to my own understanding of memory. While the author Corkin did include many human elements in describing the long and well-researched life of H.B. after his brain surgery left him with permanent amnesia, she is a professor and writes at a level that her college and graduate students would read at, including many medical and neuropsychological terms that were a little hard to understand even though I am a college graduate and have had some experience in grad school.I think this book is written more for the memory researcher or psychoanalyst who wants more information about the most famous and well-studied brain in the world up to the present time and not so much for the general layperson with a casual interest who might find the story of H.B.'s life interesting and compelling for the human elements. I would recommend this book for anyone looking to increase their understanding of memory and what regions of the brain do what for different cognitive processes in a semi-professional way, but it will be a fairly hard read for anyone who is not really into the subject and committed to working through the professional lingo peppered throughout the book.

This is a truly remarkable book about the most famous patient in neuroscience - Patient H.M. - written by his bona-fide scientific guardian Dr. Suzanne Corkin . All students of Neuroscience know about H.M. and his anterograde amnesia due to the surgical removal of his hippocampi, but there are much more fascinating details to be learned!For example, did you know that H.M.'s amygdala were also completely removed? That he could still express a full range of emotions without the amygdala, but he had deficits in judging internal states such as hunger, thirst, and pain? Did you know that H.M. also suffered retrograde amnesia that extended backwards to almost 15 years before the surgery? H.M. was sometimes able to learn and remember certain information after his surgery, which surprised Dr. Corkin and prompted her to conduct further experiments to find out the causes. Dr. Corkin's research investigated not only the declarative memory deficits of H.M., but probed the emotion, sleep, motor skills, priming effects, and various other intricacies of learning and memory. In the book, Dr. Corkin goes into comprehensive details of her experiments, complete with the rationale and the scientific background for her experimental designs. One can learn a tremendous amount about memory research and neuroscience in general just by reading this book.Overall, this is a fascinating read. The narrative is well-written and engaging; I read the whole book cover-to-cover at once. My only minor criticisms are that 1) there could be better graphs and diagrams, and I'd appreciate more high-quality photos of the main star, Henry Molaison; and 2) names of collaborating researchers and scientists are selectively mentioned or omitted, it would be better to either mention all the names (instead of eg. a researcher at UCSD) or at least cite the names in the footnotes to give proper credit/recognition. Otherwise, this is a fascinating account of the memorable life of H.M. and of the remarkable achievements of Dr. Corkin and her colleagues!

It isn't often that you can tell the history of a field through the history of one man. But H.M could claim that honor for memory neuroscience. After going through a bilateral medial temporal-lobe resection to cure his petit mal seizures from childhood epilepsy - H.M was unable to form any new long-term memories. He specifically lacked declarative memory, memories where people can openly state what they have learned. He lost his temporal lobe, the right temporal lobe processes visual-spatial info and the right verbal info - with neural bridges providing each other with information. Anyone who has taken a course in memory will now recognize an entire world behind a simple textbook case-study mentioned in a chapter. We're privileged to have this book - but what about F.C, P.B, K.F, N.B and P.Z ? Who knows if someone will do them justice by documenting the real lives behind the case study.We know so many things about memory and about being human, how it determines our self and identity, how relationships depend on common memories - but all this abstract pondering comes to life when you look at a real-life case and how someone copes in the light of losing his humanity. It also sheds light into the recklessness of medicine during the height of psychosurgery, and how the discrete/modular view of the neural underpinnings of certain abnormalities resulted in scientists feeling that certain brain areas could be removed to cure so and so problem. The worst-case scenario can be seen when Walter Freeman operated twenty-five women a day. What is slightly disturbing is that the baton has now been passed to pharmacology, and misdiagnoses and overmedicating are simply modern-day examples of similar medical irresponsibility.H.M was really useful because he didn't suffer from any psychiatric disorder and his amnesia didn't affect cognitive performance on non-memory task - so experimental data could be isolated as the causal result of amnesia. The beauty of the Henry Molaisson was that his case revolved around so many important topics, such as the acquisition of episodic (events in certain time and place) and semantic (meanings) knowledge. For example, it was via such cases that we saw that the hippocampus is responsible for word associations.This book is very academic, and is primarily for those that have done their studies in the cognitive scientists. A regular reader wouldn't know what to make of the information or the larger picture behind the mentioned science. If you were expecting a biography, the chapter "Henry's Universe" is probably all you'll get. Its hard to write about the "most comprehensively studied patient in neuroscience" without introducing one to the history of the field and how it developed as H.M. aged.Rereadable and endlessly engrossing, can be read as a history of memory neuroscience. It tells you about the ecstasy when you find an opportunity for scientific discovery, perfectly captured by the hurried attempt to image the Henry's brain after he died to get a clear picture of his brain. The history of science owes this book a lot!

Jeffrey M Smith is a compelling writer on the dangers of GMO food. This book and video package changed my life. I have so much more knowledge & insight as to WHY GMO foods are harmful. They are hidden in our everyday lives. Eating organic/nonGMO is what keeps my family healthy.

Jeffrey Smith has done a great service to the American public by writing this book. What Monsanto and other mega-food corps are doing to our food supply and our health is absolutely criminal. This book reveals the inside story and the cover-ups that the food industry and the government don't want us to know. It will make you mad as well as determined to take action to stop this assault on the nation's health and well-being. The DVD's are awesome. The DVD about the changes in student behavior at high school once the cafeteria changed the meals to natural, wholesome meals was astounding. Just think of the tremendous changes in both behavior and academic achievement that could be happening across this country if schools would only change their GMO meals to all natural, organic foods. We must become educated about GMO foods and support State's efforts to get GMO or non-GMO labeling put on all foods sold at grocery stores. What is happening to our food is a national tragedy that needs to be stopped now.

Fortunately, some years ago, we shifted to buying almost NO processed foods. Thank goodness.If necessary, we read the fine print ingredient list on any packaged foods. We avoid packaged foods containing additives. But "Seeds" notes that the problem does not have to be listed!!!!!!The video, Foods, Inc., and the set of Seeds of Deception present intensely informative commentary about our USA food supply and its management.It is scary.

Wonderfully done in a manner that was easy for the lay man to understand. I am passing this to everyone I know to watch. Even more important now that Oregon lost our bid to require GMO labeling by about 3000 votes. Educate your family and friends,

A must read. Jeffrey is an incredible expert on all things GMO and is a leading advocate. I actually met him, and he's a brilliant guy. I have all his books and videos and consider them a really good tool in explaining GMOs. I actually sent out a bunch a few years ago as Christmas gifts, and still send this book to people who are clueless about GMOs.

All of this information is excellent. Well presented and clear. Jeffrey Smith really knows his stuff. Even with my existing knowledge about genetically modified foods, including training with Smith himself, I learned a lot from the book and from the videos. The book is can't-put-it-down engaging, though in a rather horrifying way, given the issues it addresses. The videos and audio are excellent for sharing with others.

Too bad most of the public is so uninformed about the agribusiness industry and lobby. Keep up the good work Jeffrey M. Smith

This book was a gift for my 2 year old's birthday 2 weeks ago. He absolutely loves it. It has been read to him every day since and even with gentle use, it fell apart within a few days. We were even more careful than usual after reading another review about the binding quality, but to no avail. Several pages have completely detached from the binding already. That has never happened to any of our children's books before. It is such a shame. Exceptionally poor quality. I finally had to put it away and now it's in book-limbo. What am I to do with a beloved book that fell apart & would cost a small fortune to have rebound?The content of the book is fabulous. Beautiful illustrations and engaging descriptions.I really hope the quality is improved though. Extremely disappointing.

Finally, I can hold meaningful conversations with my four year old without him having to stoop down to my level!I, and other moms in the neighborhood, used to refer to any big construction vehicle in the vicinity as a bulldozer. The looks of searing disappointment he gave at those times has been etched into my soul. Never again.You should check out the author's other alphabet books. We also have the underwater one and the beetle one, and my son loves all of them.

This is a fantastic book! My 2 year old makes us read it to him every night. It not only teaches the abc's but also the names of construction equipment. Which is a bonus for me because I don't know all of the names. And my little one is always asking what they are called.Illustrations are well done as well .I would definetly recommend this book.

My almost two year old son is obsessed with this book, and it is helping tremendously with his letter recognition. He loves the illustrations, and we love that it doesn't 'dumb down' the information for children. It's really adorable when he asks to see the knucklebone loader by name. He requests this for his bedtime story every night, and we have been very careful not to let him mistreat it. We have had it just over a month (incidentally, just outside of the return window), and it is completely falling apart. All of the center pages have separated from the binding and have fallen out. The only option I see is to put the pages in a binder, which is disappointing- it was a beautiful book- or to buy a new one, which I'd be willing to do, but afraid it would also just fall apart.

A good idea, but not very well executed. A bit too serious, and the choice of vehicles and names is a bit exotic. Probably it would make most sense to a child of a construction worker, living in the 70s.ABC books should feel canonical and comprehensive, like the alphabet itself. This feels a bit like a stretch.

I bought these for my two grandsons for Christmas. This is a beautiful, well-done, engaging book! I wish I had had it for my sons so we could correctly name the various pieces of machinery that we saw around. "Real" books--about real life rather than some Disney cartoon--are a bit hard to find. And just try finding one that isn't dorky or girly about horses! --And that has correct information. I really don't know enough about this subject matter to know for sure that it is all completely on target, but it seems to be written by someone who actually knows. I'm really tired of books that teach children that baby horses are ponies or that horses are for girls. This book would be well enjoyed by either boys OR girls that wanted to know about all these things! YAY!!! Just a fine book. Three of my children do not have children of their own yet--but when they do, a copy of this book will be in each house! Jerry Pallotta--I'm looking for more of your books! Ooh, and I didn't check the illustrator's name--but it's a name I will look for as well.

We have been through several copies of this book. My son, now 9, has autism, and has been obsessed with construction since about the age of 2. He was having difficulty learning his letters, and this book fixes that. He learned the names of all the trucks, then we started pointing out the letters that went with them, eventually moving to asking him to find the letter. By the middle of kindergarten he had tested out on upper and lower case letters! We bought a copy as a farewell gift for his kindergarten teacher. We wrote a letter to the author and illustrator expressing how great this book had been for our son and got an email back from the illustrator thanking us for sharing our son's story. If you have a child who likes big trucks, grab this book for them.

This book has been my boys' (age 5 and 4) favorite for about 3 years. We have read it so many times that it is beginning to come apart. I'm actually going to buy another soon because my boys have literally loved this book to death. There is SO much information in this book. When they were younger I used to just read the first sentence on each page and do the sound effects. Now that they are a bit older I read it all, but I don't really have to since they have most of it memorized because we've read it 100 million times.

I like the top 10 format. It focuses the priorities and then makes the visit easy. The Marrakech book worked well for us and we had a great trips a result. We had a guide but due to this book we added a few sights the guide would have skipped that we were glad to see.

As always DK Publishing did not disappoint. Great for Marrakech AND all the side trips we took.

My wife and I swear by these guide books wherever we go. They have interesting and helpful information and the pocket map has proven to be invaluable in numerous cities. Worth the price and we'll order more for future travel.

I've always enjoyed solving brain teasers and logic puzzles, and I still keep some of these books in the family vehicle. Of course interactive books on my ipad are so much better. This book is fun and very challenging at times. There were a few brain teasers that I knew, but several that I had never heard of! Overall it was a good mental exercise.

This is a a very interactive book that will help you jog your mind and be creative. It has very good brain teasers and riddles some of which are easy to analyze and some that need one to think and be creative. The book is awesome as it also provides hints and finally gives you the answer of the riddle and this makes it easy for you. It is a good book for the kids as well as adults as this book is very intelligent to make tour mind very active and creative. A very nice book. Good job by the author.

I create things, and sometimes you need to jog your mind. Your creative well can run dry without any ideas. This was more so neuroplasticity to me. I figured out a few riddles by reading the riddle, and finding the obvious answer, ergo what was Mary's mom's last child's name. Many of them got me like what does every house have. I'd say a wall, but in this day and age, the answer is debatable, overall, a mind twisting few hours. Entertainment's job.

I love to answer riddles. This book contains challenging riddles. Some are very easy but there are also some that I had a hard time figuring out the answer. I tried my best to answer all of the riddles without peeking on the answers at the back. Unfortunately, i am not that successful in that aspect. I missed my childhood while perusing this book..

For an 8 year old. Maybe 7. One simple question per page is NOT "interactive riddle, brain teaser". Going to return this.

A fun book! I got this as a present for my boyfriend whoâ€™s really good at riddles and there were only a few that stumped him. For me, though, not being particularly good at riddles, it was a fun challenge.

Love the riddles/brain teasers. This is a good book to go through while getting ready for bed - fun to make a game out of it with another person to see who can figure out the answer first.

I liked this one. Plenty of good riddles. Only 1 aggrevated me with the answer. I read another before this one and it lasted about 20 mins. This is one worth the cost.

I really wanted to like this book. I was excited before I even received it. Somewhere along the way I missed there were particular examples for titles and roles for more than half of the book. If you do reviews this is a MUST have! I spend hours doing reviews each year. This little lovely really helped me get to the heart of the matter and provide really constructive feedback. I am so happy that I got this. I will purchase the one with more phrases for this coming years reviews. I can't give it enough praise. Do yourself a favor and pick one up

I use this book in combination with other books of this type as a crutch when I'm suffering from writers block and I can't wordsmith a coherent sentence or simply in need of a different way to say "Good Job". What I like about this one is the job/task specific phrases that go beyond the generic phrases. This book has come in handy.

Great tool for Junior PO or enlisted members in the armed forces to adequately write performance marks.

While there are some good phrases to use, I was disappointed overall. Because of the great reviews, I ordered two copies of this book to keep in my office and lend to Managers to aid in review writing. After digging into the book, I wish I hadn't ordered both copies. Again, there are some good tips, valuable advice and good phrasing, however, some of the suggested phrases are far too subjective to be appropriate in our reviews. The appendix of "high impact" verbs will be far more helpful than the actual suggested phrasing.

Not sure if you can call this book â€œNewâ€ but it is in very good condition. Nonetheless the content inside the book is very good and a helpful tool.

Perfect for quick reviews, semi annual reviews. I wouldn't completely rely on this book for a thorough annual review though... just my take. Good product though.

Great book for a beginner or intermediate level classical guitar (even a fake classical guitarist like me). I thought the book came with a CD but it has a download link for all the audio clips of the songs, which is even better! The songs sound simple but they are harder to play than they sound. This book should keep occupied for a while!

Nice, somehow I thought more of them would be more widely known pieces. Still, Great Bach melodies and harmonies, easy to play, good collection!!

I enjoy reading through these songs. They aren't too hard, but they're pretty and make for nice sight reading exercises.

Nice, playable arrangements. Great collection to have if you like Bach!

I really love these arrangements. The harmony is full and rich, and right at my playing level. It's always nice to have some Bach in your repertoire when you explain to other you're a "classical" guitarist. Though, even though the title says easy, I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. I have been playing for 5 years, and 1 year classical and it takes me about an hour to become acquainted with a song, and a couple to perfect it. I plan on learning one a day, it's like push-ups for guitar!The only cons I found were that there was tablature (if you're playing at this level, in my opinion you shouldn't need it), and each song does not include a BWV number
