This is a great picture book with brief but thorough descriptions of what you're looking at. The Kindle version I purchased had clear beautiful photographs that I could zoom in on and explode details. This book will be reviewed many times. Worth the money.

Downtown Phoenix is dead, and this book shows why in an extensive collection of great pictures showing the vanished structures of eloquence and local pride that once attracted people to the heart of the city. It's not a wordy dissertation about the decline and fall of the downtown; instead, it's a collection of photographs with brief captions showing what Phoenix officials destroy and allow to be destroyed. One heart-rendering example is a section devoted to the Fox West Coast Theatre, a classic great movie palace that was even better than the Los Angeles version. It opened in 1931, and was bulldozed in 1975 to make way for a bus parking lot. The words of Woodrow Wilson never rang more true, "A nation which does not know what it was yesterday, does not know what it is today, nor what it is trying to do." It sums up Phoenix, stuck in the worst of the 2008 economic downturn with nearly 30 percent downtown office vacancies even in 2010. Bulldozers and wrecking balls ae the fate of many classic buildings in downtown Phoenix, where civic officials place a higher aesthetic value on empty parking lots than on elegant quality and classic design buildings. It's is a testimonial to the years when Phoenix had pride in local efforts; since 1972, when I got to Phoenix, retail business has been chased out of downtown and billions of tax dollars invested in fortress-like office complexes designed to separate employees from the homeless. Almost 30 years ago, Sen. Barry Goldwater moved his Arizona office out of downtown Phoenix because too many people were afraid to hazard a trip to the downtown area. Many downtown employees went only from secure parking garages to their offices and back, reluctant to ever use the streets. Conditions have not improved. Melikian comes by his pride in historic buildings naturally; his father restored a classic downtown hotel which is now a boutique alternative to the plastic and plywood blandness of modern hotels. He offers no judgments in this book; readers may either look and conclude "Interesting, but good riddance" or more likely be confirmed in their reasons never again to go downtown. The Melikians put their efforts where their hearts are; their San Carlos Hotel is the last interesting walking venue of the downtown. The rest of the old downtown is either blank stone walls that are somewhat less interesting than walking through an abandoned stone quarry;m mif not that, in in many instances its empty store fronts and dusty parking lots. It's a wonderful book. It's not often the destruction of what might have been a vibrant downtown area is so eloquently presented.

Great Book for anyone who wants to read and see about Phoenix history.

Great book on the changes in Phoenix.

I enjoyed the book very much. Many of the buildings I remember. The author, Robert Melikian, tires to make a case for saving these old buildings. I think he failed. Most, if not all, of these buildings needed to be razed. My feeling is; you don't save something just to be saving it, it needs to be worth saving, these buildings weren't.

Very interesting and informative! The book was very nostalogic for me and reminded me of many many wonderful times I had living in the Phoenix area, Valley of the Sun.

I was fortunate enough to see the author, discuss his book, on local TV. I am an architectural history buff, and this history of buildings, in Phoenix, was terrific. If you have lived in Phoenix for a while, and remember many of the great old buildings, this is a book you'd be interested in!

Purchased as a gift for my sister. We remember quite a few of the old buildings shown in the book.

American Rock: Region, Rock, and Culture in American Climbing, by Don Mellor

From Publishers Weekly

As American as Rock Climbing and Baseball Rock climbing, once the exclusive province of the wealthy and the tough, has become increasingly popular in recent years. In American Rock: Region, Rock, and Culture in American Climbing, Don Mellor (Rock Climbing), a professional climbing guide and instructor for more than 20 years, surveys the history of the sport in the U.S. He explores the effects of regional variations in landscape and culture on approaches to climbing, whether in New England's White Mountains and New York's Adirondacks, the deserts and canyons of New Mexico and Arizona, Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park, Utah's Zion, Oregon's Smith Rock or Washington's North Cascades. Climbers will enjoy it, but for light travel they may prefer to wait for the paperback. 42 b&w photos, one map. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Building on his rock-climbing guide experience and earlier books (Climbing in the Adirondacks and Rock Climbing: A Trailside Guide), Mellor has written a thorough overview of American rock climbing destinations. His belief that "a route is more than just a route it's an encounter with the physical world, and it's an association with climbers of past generations" resonates in every chapter. Dividing his text geographically (e.g., New England, Dixie, California, Colorado), Mellor introduces the natural history and rock, the original climbers and the historic routes they put up, the local climbing scene, and the regional eccentricities for each area. In the last chapter, he highlights the impact overuse can bring to climbing areas, which are often on public lands. He challenges climbers to "cherish the resource" (vertical rock) as access and regulations on use become more common. American Rock is unique for what it is not: a guidebook or a climbing memoir. This work will interest both new and experienced climbers who want to learn about America's climbing areas from a single volume. Recommended for public libraries where there is interest. Why have I not encountered Mellor's wring before? Where the hell have I been? He has written two other books, is the resident climbing expert on gorp.com and has been an active participant in the sport for decades. His style sets a high standard for reflective, artful consideration of often contentious problems. This is no dry tome, however: Mellor's book is a true adventure. Here's a grand tour of many of the premiere climbing destinations in this country. He celebrates both the majestic and the more humble arenas. The book is informative and insightful. His writing is clear and consise, exhibiting a tasteful balance between the sociological and the athletic, the academic and the pragmatic. American Rock imparts a fresh perspective on the issues surrounding ethics and access, as well as the responsibilities climbers carry toward the resource and other users with both common and conflicting interests.Geology is not neglected here, but that information is available in a hundred other places. This book's strength is in its study of the key players and the milieu in which each of the areas presented developed historically and how they are being transformed presently. Much food for thought. This is both a great reference for the traveling climber, and a thoughtful plea for sanity. His love and reverence of the medium and the sport are apparent throughout.

Mellor provides a very thougtful balanced view of today's climbing community. He weighs the inconvenience and admistrative problems associated with over crowded crags against the benefit of a large population of like minded individuals who can vote and influence bureaucratic decision. He also does a good of communicating the ethics of self reliance and leave no trace behavior for the benefit of those entering the sport.Along the way, he also imparts a respct for the customs as well as the history of our richly varied national climbin scene.

Book provides a summary of the history of the larger and many of the smaller climbing areas.Provides information about how each area developed and explains why each area is the way it is.Probably wouldn't be interesting to non climbers.

This was a gift and a very well-received one! I looked around at others on the market, but this really had some interesting options for the beginner and the expert.

This is a huge book, which could possibly best be described as the condensed encyclopedia of Oracle databases. The book covers everything from administration to performance tuning to using SQL*Plus to installing Oracle on Linux to using RMAN. While I did not read this book cover to cover, I did page through the book looking for interesting topics to read. I did read the author's "Expert Oracle Database 10g Administration" book cover to cover a couple years ago and was at the time very impressed with that book. There were a couple small errors in the 10g book, repeated a couple times, but I commented to a couple people that the 10g book is by far the best and most thorough Oracle reference book that I had run across. The appendix at the back of the 10g book was very effective in helping me find exactly the right topic, and usually the right syntax for just about any task. The appendix in the 11g version of the book is just about as good. It appears that the author may have rushed the job of updating the 10g book for 11g R1 as quite a few screen captures still show Oracle versions such as 10.1.0.3 and a couple other sections of the book also seem to be more specific to 10g R1 than 11g R1 (or 11g R2).This book contains a lot of great and/or very helpful information, but while paging through the book I found a couple problems. Overlooking the problems, I would still recommend this book as a reference for Oracle 11g R1. The section on performance tuning is not my first choice for performance tuning information.Problems found when paging through the book (I know that I probably missed several issues):Page 90 mentions RAID 0+1 but not the more robust RAID 10.Page 92 states "RAID 5 offers many advantages over the other levels of RAID. The traditional complaint about the `write penalty' should be discounted because of sophisticated advances in write caches and other strategies that make RAID 5 more efficient than in the past." Visit [...] to see the opinions of other DBAs.Page 166 states "if you use an Oracle block size of 64KB (65,536 bytes)..." The maximum supported block size is 32KB, not 64KB, and some platforms support a maximum of a 16KB block size.Page 171 states when suggesting the use of multiple block sizes in a single database "if you have large indexes in your database, you will need a large block size for their tablespaces." "Oracle provides separate pools for the various block sizes, and this leads to better use of Oracle memory." For those who have followed the multiple block size discussions over the years, it should be fairly clear that it is not a good idea to use multiple block sizes in a single database. Oracle's documentation states that multiple block sizes are intended to be used only to support transportable tablespaces.Page 181 states "The database writer process writes dirty blocks to disk under the following conditions... Every 3 seconds." A check of the Oracle documentation will quickly confirm that this is not the case.Page 182 states "Oracle further recommends that you first ensure that your system is using asynchronous I/O before deploying additional database writer processes beyond the default number - you might not need multiple database writer processes if so." I think that I misread this several times as saying "do not enable multiple database writers unless you also plan to enable asynchronous I/O," which would be an incorrect statement.Page 190 states "this is why the buffer cache hit ratio, which measures the percentage of time users accessed the data they needed from the buffer cache (rather than requiring a disk read), is such an important indicator of performance of the Oracle instance." The author provides a link on page 1161 to an article authored by Cary Millsap which discusses why a higher buffer cache hit ratio may not be ideal. This is definitely a step in the right direction regarding the buffer cache hit ratio, but it might be better to simply ignore the statistic.Page 190 when describing the buffer cache hit ratio states that the formula for calculating the hit ratio is "hit rate = (1 - (physical reads)/(logical reads))*100". The Oracle Database Performance Tuning Guide 11g Release 1 manual states that the correct formula is "1 - (('physical reads cache')/('consistent gets from cache'+'db block gets from cache'))"Page 395 states "11.1.0 is an alternative name for Oracle Database 11g Release 2." Oracle 11g R2 was just released on September 1, 2009 and its version is 11.2.0.1.Page 402 correctly (according to the documentation) states that Oracle Enterprise Linux 4 and 5, as well as Red Hat Enterprise Linux are supported platforms for Oracle Database 11g, and correctly (according to the documentation) does not list Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3. Page 403 lists the required RPM packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, but ignores the supported Linux platforms.Page 405 shows parameters that need to be set on Linux. This appears to be a direct copy of the parameters in the Oracle documentation, but the author did not include the net.core.wmem-max parameter. Note that Oracle 11.2.0.1 will require different parameters than those specified in this book, but that is not the fault of the author.Page 452 states that the COMPATIBLE parameter may be set to "10.2 so the untested features of the new Oracle version won't hurt your application." I think that this is misleading at best.Page 466 states "If you're supporting data warehouse applications, it makes sense to have a very large DB_BLOCK_SIZE - something between 8KB and 32KB. This will improve database performance when reading huge chunks from disk." This is not quite a correct statement, especially if the DB_FILE_MULTIBLOCK_READ_COUNT is set correctly, or not set in the case Oracle 10.2.0.1 or above is in use. 8KB is the standard block size, so I am not sure why the author groups it with the other block sizes in the very large block size group.Page 477 states "the default value for the STATISTICS_LEVEL initialization parameter is TYPICAL. You need to use this setting if you want to use several of Oracle's features, including Automatic Shared Memory Management." This is an incomplete statement as a setting of ALL will also work.Page 1055 shows the use of both CASCADE>=YES and CASCADE=>'TRUE' with DBMS_STATS. I believe that TRUE is the correct syntax, but it should not be specified in single quotes.Page 1067 states "subqueries perform better when you use IN rather than EXISTS." The reality is that Oracle may very well automatically transform queries using IN syntax into queries using EXISTS syntax (or vice-versa), and may even transform both IN syntax queries and EXISTS syntax queries into standard join syntax.Page 1074 stated that "inline stored functions can help improve the performance of your SQL statement." The author then demonstrated this concept by converting a SQL statement with a three table equijoin accessing apparent primary and foreign keys of the tables into a SQL statement which accessed a single table and called two PL/SQL functions (per row), each of which queried one of the other two tables which were included in the original equijoin SQL statement. This approach does not seem to be a good idea given the number of additional context switches which will result, as well as the additional number of parse calls. In short, do not solve something in PL/SQL when it may be easily solved in SQL alone.Page 1075 states "you should avoid the use of inequality and the greater than or equal to predicates, as they may also bypass indexes." Something does not look right about that statement.Page 1089 states "the indexes could become unbalanced in a database with a great deal of DML. It is important to rebuild such indexes regularly so queries can run faster." Interesting suggestion - I believe that standard SELECT statements are classified as DML as they are definitely not DDL. An index cannot become unbalanced, and indexes rarely need to be rebuilt - see Richard Foote's blog for the more details.Page 1089 states "when you rebuild the indexes, include the COMPUTE STATISTICS statement so you don't have to gather statistics after the rebuild." Oracle 10g and above automatically collect statistics when building indexes, and I would assume that the same is true when rebuilding indexes.Page 1108 states that "cpu_time is the total parse and execute time" when describing the columns found in V$SQL. It is actually the time measure in centiseconds (100th of a second) of the CPU utilization when executing the SQL statement, and probably also includes the CPU time for parsing the SQL statement, but I have not verified this.Page 1154 provides a demonstration of finding sessions consuming a lot of CPU time. The example used the `CPU used by this session' statistic rather than drilling through V$SYS_TIME_MODEL into V$SESS_TIME_MODEL. The example used the `CPU used by this session' as a reason for examining parse CPU usage and recursive CPU usage. While it is good to check CPU usage of sessions, there are a couple problems with this approach. First, the `CPU used by this session' statistic is not updated until the first fetch from a SQL statement is returned to the client. If the client was waiting for the last hour for the first row to be returned, the CPU utilization will show close to 0 seconds difference between the start of the SQL statement and the check of the `CPU used by this session' statistic in V$SESSTAT - this is not the case for the statistics in V$SESS_TIME_MODEL, which are updated in near real-time. Second, the change (delta) in the statistic for the sessions was not determined - if one session had been connected for 120 days, it probably should have consumed more CPU time than a session connected for 30 minutes, and probably should not be investigated.Even with the above issues, I would still recommend this book as a reference. For specific information on performance tuning, using RMAN, or installing on Linux, it might be a good idea to use a second book for deeper understanding of the process.

Purchased this book based on my good experience with this author's writing style(easy to read and follow) with 10g books. What I have read so far is very well explained. I am not planning to read to whole book right away, will be using this book as a reference. I have noticed few errors in the book and went to the publishers website to see corrections for the same and could not find any. I could not find the author's email contact anywhere in the book to give him a feedback and clarify few things. Sam, if you read this review please contact me at sudheerrm@yahoo.com.udpate:The author contacted me and clarified what I was looking for, at this point I do not have any further questions.

Excellent

Nice book

One of my best Oracle Books.

Lets me honest, as I have said in other reviews of Oracle 11g, Oracle 11g is a beast. There are so many new features that have been added to it in this new version that it sometimes feels that you are learning a whole new database.Yes, Oracle 11g is pretty much the defacto standard when it comes to DBMS but it can take years to fully master all its complexities. I've only been using Oracle for a few years and sometimes I still consider myself a newbie at time.So even though this book seems like a monster too (1300+ pages), it is something that no Oracle DBA or even casual user should be without. The author, Sam Alapati really covers everything there is to know to fully administer Oracle 11g and some things I didnt even know existed until I went through the book. You dont have to read this book cover to cover to fully appreciate this book's wealth of knowledge. The book is very well organized and makes it really easy to find exactly what you are looking for. Since a book this size really has to be well organized otherwise you will spend hours trying to find something. Not only is this book very well organized but is written in a way in that you don't have to be a genius to understand it. I've read so many other Oracle books that assume you have a Phd in engineering or something to understand what the author is talking about. This book explains all the topics in an easy to read and digest manner with plenty of "real-life" examples that you probably already have encountered at work using Oracle. The book is divided into 7 sections: Data Modeling, Achitecture, Installation and Upgrading, User Management, Backup and Recovery, Managing, and Performance Tuning. The author explains so much excellent information in this book than its really like getting 2 or 3 books in one. The Performance section alone is worth the price alone since many other Oracle books barely talk about this topic unless its a separate book. And the Architecture and Installation sections really explain how the new version (11g) really differs from previous versions and quickly makes you understand how much has changed from older versions. This book can also be used as reference book for getting your Oracle certifications as well: Oracle Database SQL Certified Expert exam.So I highly recommend this book to anyone who really wants to learn Oracle the right way and save money in the process since you really do not need another book! A great buy!

Dr. Hallowell's earlier book, Driven to Distraction, was a benchmark book for many people, myself included; but it presented ADHD as essentially a disability. Here he tries to recast ADHD as an asset in the rough. Unfortunately, it really isn't, so there's a lot of encouragement here, but not much actual content. The most useful statement in the book is that if you have ADHD, your two most important coping strategies are to marry the right person (someone who is organized and willing to be the organizer) and go into the right profession. That's sound advice. (I have ADHD, the right spouse, and the wrong job, so I know.) But there's disappointingly few specifics, especially about choosing professions. What do you look for? How do you recognize it? What are examples? Has Dr. Hallowell or anyone else actually studied this? The author's intentions are good; I'll be very interested in the follow-through...when it appears.

I ordered this book in 2010 and had forgotten about it. I recently hired an ADHD Coach/ Counselor who suggested I get this book at our first meeting. I found it on my bookshelf and to my surprise, I had highlighted passages throughout much of the book, something I almost never do. Then of course being ADHD I put it away and forgot about it. (I guess the big surprise here is that I could find it again.) Now we are using it in our sessions. I find it very helpful to be able to point to a certain section and say, that's me! I connected with this book in a way that hasn't happened with any other book. I feel like the authors really understand both ADHD and how it affects me personally.

A breakthrough work because it deals with ADD in adults. I loved the reviews and the comments on them. I only gave it four stars because it is a job to read and not all of it applies to everyone. This book covers a lot of ground, but the most important thing for me was finding out for the first time, at age 62, that what made life not fixable was ADD. Like most, I never considered it because I had an effortless youth with high grades and no trouble. I had a great, rewarding 35 year career in computers, then my life no longer worked and I had no "Plan B." If a friend had read this book five years ago, it would have saved me and them a lot of misery. Luckily, my psychiatrist deals with ADD in adults.Just reading Chapter 1 will tell you who has ADD. It may be you...or a friend. There is also a chapter on how to live with a person who is working on his ADD.

This is the second book I've read from Dr. Hallowell on ADHD. He is the definitive expert in my eyes and I like his writing style. This book is a bit more geared to the older person and learning to live with ADHD as an adult. Now that my children are in their 20's and we are still dealing with issues, I found it very helpful. As the author advises, read it yourself to understand someone with ADHD (children or spouse, as there is stuff about marriages in here) and then you can tell them about it. It would be great if you could get someone with ADHD to read it, but I had no luck with that. However, I did have them take the self-assessment in the book. Even so, it's a must read for anyone who has a person with ADHD in your life and it will help you understand the condition.

As a fellow psychiatrist that specializes in adult ADHD I am indebted to the authors for putting ADHD on the map with their first book Driven to Distraction. I was expecting more of the same but came away very disappointed. The authors describe theories of causation and nutritional remedies that have either no evidence to support them or have been debunked a long time ago. This disorder is difficult enough to suffer with and treat to take such a reckless approach. Even worse is the writers are held (rightfully so) in such high regard by people with ADHD. I would recommend Attention Deficit Disorder: The Unfocused Mind in Children and Adults (Yale University Press Health & Wellness) by Thomas Brown, PhD. It is a much more scientifically accurate book written for ordinary people that makes understanding this disorder much easier than any other book I've found.

Still one of the best books on ADHD and various treatments, including "alternative." Compassionately written - makes you feel like ADHD is not just a "pathology" - that there are gifts that come with it, even through the struggles. Book was well packed by seller and shipped fast. Recommeded seller.

Very helpful and written to connect with a wide spectrum of people at different stages of the process of discovery. My favorite thing about it -- and why I feel I can recommend this book to so many people -- is that it does not fall prey to the tendency to label people. Rather, it takes a strengths and asset based approach, looking at the qualities of people with ADD as both strengths and also bringing some particular challenges that can be addressed, minimized/managed.

Overall, this is a good book, written for people with ADD by someone with ADD. As such, early n in the book the author gives the reader permission to read the book the way people with ADD are going to read it anyway - to skip around and not feel bad if you don't finish it. This is wonderfully refreshing, and shows he knows his audience. There are suggestions for adjustments in diet, physical exercise, and mind exercises. The downside is of the book is unfortunately also that it was written by someone with ADD. He has an entire chapter about an e-mail someone sent to him with advice that he never bothered to verify the accuracy of. Most of his advice is vague. Some of the information he provides on nutrition is just incorrect.Overall, it does contain useful information. However, I found the book Healing ADD (https://www.amazon.com/Healing-ADD-Breakthrough-Program-Allows/dp/0425183270/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1494637438&sr=8-3&keywords=amen+add) more useful.

Washington Black: A novel, by Esi Edugyan

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of September 2018:: Washington Black is that rarest of novels: a hybrid that knows exactly what it is. The story begins as an antebellum novel about Wash, an 11-year-old slave working on a Barbados plantation run by a sadistic master. When Christopher, the master’s brother, takes Wash under his wing and teaches him to read, the novel turns more toward adventure and scientific exploration. There are inventions, twists, and turns; there is danger and intrigue; there is travel and growth. What holds everything together is author Esi Edugyan’s writing chops. She is a precise writer who has created a world that seems whole and all-embracing. Her characters are fully realized human beings. The weight of personal freedom is a theme that winds through the book, as does the opposing weight of cultural and societal expectations. There is so much to digest here, and so much to enjoy, that readers may well be tempted to read this book twice. --Chris Schluep, Amazon Book Review

Review

“Perfectly executed . . . Soaring . . . More than a tale of human bondage, it’s also an enthralling meditation on the weight of freedom, wrapped in a rousing adventure story stretching to the ends of the earth.” —Renée Graham, The Boston Globe  “Terrifically exciting . . . An engrossing hybrid of 19th-century adventure and contemporary subtlety, a rip-roaring tale of peril imbued with our most persistent strife . . . Discover what the rest of the world already knows: Edugyan is a magical writer.” —Ron Charles, The Washington Post “Riveting . . . [A] towering achievement . . . Edugyan is one of our sharpest and deepest writers of historical fiction.” —David Canfield, Entertainment Weekly“A lush, exhilarating travelogue reminiscent of Jules Verne . . . Edugyan, like her hero, can paint an indelible scene.” —Laura Miller, The New Yorker“Gripping . . . Astonishing . . . Washington Black’s presence in these pages is fierce and unsettling. His urge to live all he can is matched by his eloquence.” —Colm Toibin, The New York Times Book Review “A wonder of an adventure story, powered by the helium of fantasy, but also by the tender sensibility of its aspiring young hero, Wash Black . . . Much of the pleasure of reading Washington Black derives from Edugyan’s ingenious storytelling gifts, but her novel is more than just a buoyant bauble . . . Washington Black is an unconventional and often touching novel about the search for transcendence above categories.” —Maureen Corrigan, NPR/Fresh Air“As harrowing a portrayal of slavery as Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad, but also a globe-trotting, page-turning adventure story. A historical epic with much to say about the present-day world.” —Justine Jordan, The Guardian“Extraordinary . . . Edugyan is a marvelous writer.” —Michael Upchurch, Seattle Times“Profoundly humane.” —Johanna Thomas-Corr, The Times (UK)“A daring work of empathy and imagination, featuring a Barbados slave boy in the 1830s who flees barbaric cruelty in a hot-air balloon and embarks on a life of adventure that is wondrous, melancholy, and strange.” —The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice)"An astounding novel . . . It is impossible for the reader not to hang on to Wash’s every word.” —Holly Silva, St. Louis Post-Dispatch “A sparkling subversion of a high-stakes Victorian yarn, full of truths and startling marvels . . . Wash is a singular, dazzling narrator.”—Anita Felicelli, San Francisco Chronicle“Masterful . . . Wondrous . . . Gripping . . . Edugyan’s depiction of this dark period is vivid and captivating. [She] is too subtle a novelist to belabour her story’s contemporary relevance, but, like the moral stain of human bondage, it is palpable all the same. At a time when blackness still invites unwarranted violence, young Wash’s hard lessons resonate.”—The Economist“Washington Black is a rare creation. It is a work of unmistakable literary sensibility, written in prose that is fresh and beautiful, yet it retains a storyteller’s skill to shock and surprise.” —Amanda Craig, Daily Telegraph“Exquisite.” —Boris Kachka, New York magazine“A full-pelt adventure story featuring hot-air balloon crashes, blizzards in the Arctic, scientific discovery, knife fights in dark alleys, bounty hunters, and forbidden romance, it has the seemingly old-fashioned qualities of being gripping and plot-driven, as well as a novel of ideas . . . Surprisingly uplifting.”—Francesca Angelini, The Times (London)“Magnificent . . . By placing a black slave at the heart and centre of this epic romp, by making Wash the explorer of lands, science and art, Edugyan reclaims long-lost terrain in this ambitious, headspinning work.” —Nilanjana Roy, Financial Times“A gripping historical narrative exploring both the bounds of slavery and what it means to be truly free.” —Vanity Fair“Edugyan’s genius here is that she’s found an urgent, fresh way of writing the antebellum novel . . . A romping yarn, beautifully and evocatively written, the narrative spinning along at a glorious pace.” —Lucy Scholes, The National “Thrilling . . . Washington Black is a gripping tale, made vivid by Esi Edugyan’s gifts for language and character, and by the strength of her story . . . The reader feels honoured to have kept Wash company on his journeying: and moved to see him embark upon his true beginning.” —Erica Wagner, The New Statesman“Terrific . . . A multi-faceted tale that travels across geography and history. In its rich details and finely tuned ear for language, the book creates a virtual world . . . Edugyan is a virtuosic writer . . . She satisfies the ultimate demand we make of novels: an intriguing examination of unanswerable, but essential, questions.”—Martha Anne Toll, The Millions“Captivating . . . Edugyan’s fiction always stays strong, beautiful and beguiling.” —Arifa Akbar, The Observer (UK)“Washington Black is nothing short of a masterpiece. Esi Edugyan has a rare talent for turning over little known stones of history and giving her reader a new lens on the world, a new way of understanding subject matter we arrogantly think we know everything about. This book is an epic adventure and a heartfelt tale about love and morality and their many contradictions. I loved it.”—Attica Locke, author of Bluebird, Bluebird“In her elegant, nuanced writing style, Edugyan unfolds Wash’s experiences as he realizes his freedom.” —Joan Gaylord, Christian Science Monitor  “An absorbing, lyrically arresting investigation of freedom in its many forms . . . [that] becomes an exuberant paean to the transformative powers of storytelling.”—Claire Allfree, Metro (UK)“At the core of this novel, with its searing, supple prose and superb characters, is a visceral depiction of the abomination of slavery. Yet, as importantly, it explores an unlikely friendship, the limits to understanding another’s suffering, the violence lurking in humans, and the glories of adventure in a world full of wonders.” —The Daily Mail “A vibrant, poignant tale of a man’s search for selfhood in a world where some see him as less than whole . . . Remarkable.” —Library Journal (starred)“Wonderful . . . Eloquent . . . Brilliant . . . Wash and Titch are so alive as to be unforgettable . . . This important novel from the author of the superb Half-Blood Blues belongs in every library.” —Booklist (starred)“Edugyan’s magnificent third novel again demonstrates her range and gifts . . . Framing the story with rich evocations of the era’s science and the world it studies, Edugyan mines the tensions between individual goodwill and systemic oppression, belonging and exclusion, wonder and terror, and human and natural order . . . Crafted in supple, nuanced prose, Edugyan’s novel is both searing and beautiful.” —Publishers Weekly (starred, boxed)“High adventure fraught with cliffhanger twists marks this runaway-slave narrative, which leaps, sails, and soars from Caribbean cane fields to the fringes of the frozen Arctic and across a whole ocean . . . One of the most unconventional escapes from slavery ever chronicled . . . Edugyan displays as much ingenuity and resourcefulness as her main characters in spinning this yarn, and the reader’s expectations are upended almost as often as her hero’s. A thoughtful, boldly imagined ripsnorter that broadens inventive possibilities for the antebellum novel.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred)“A thrilling page-turner . . . also a lyrical contemplation of captivity and freedom, and the scars that stay with us for life.” —Marsha Lederman, Globe & Mail“A powerful story about slavery . . . The first section of the book, set on the plantation, is a scintillating tour de force . . . A novel worthy of its subject.” —Kathy O’Shaughnessy, Literary Review“Irresistible . . . Tightly paced . . . A gripping adventure and an atmospheric portrayal of 1830s society.” —Daily Express  “A cinematic epic of slavery and freedom, it’s also a tale of high adventure and scientific endeavor . . . Both engaging and deeply affecting.” —Barb Carey, Toronto Star“Extraordinary . . . A richly entertaining read.” —Nick Rennison, BBC History Magazine“Excellent . . . Devastating . . . Unforgettable . . . In a story that is escapist, as well as poignant and political, Edugyan enjoys taking her readers where they are least expecting to go . . . Like the best historical fiction, it shines a light on the present as well as the past.” —Joanne Hayden, Irish Independent“Washington Black is an intimate portrait of slavery at its most genocidal and of the limitations of kindness in an unjust system. The book’s hero is a gifted scientist and artist fighting to live a fully human life in a world that insists on seeing him either as livestock or as an object of pity. Along the way, there are balloon rides through storms at sea, vignettes of frontier life in nineteenth century Canada, scenes of polar exploration, and the establishment of the world’s first aquarium. Washington Black is a brilliantly absorbing picaresque; a book that combines the unflinching depiction of violence with a lyrical, hallucinatory beauty.” —Sandra Newman, author of The Country of Ice Cream Star

You know a book is good if it stays with you a few days after reading it. The author, without being at all obvious about it, leads us through a story that has many levels and explorations of what it means to be "captive". Captive to a slave owner, captive to a concept, captive in an exhibit. It looks at what it takes to be truly free. This is my first book by Edugyan. It won't be my last.

The time span of this novel is from 1830-1836 with a plot line divided into four distinct sections. The story begins on the Faith Plantation in Barbados where sugar cane is grown and harvested. This section is brilliantly written! Edugyan is unsparing in her portrayal of the physical and emotional brutality of slavery. The reader meets George Washington Black, a six year old child born into slavery. Wash's family is unknown to him and his desperation to "belong to" another human being is palpable. A Dahomean slave named "Big Kit" takes on the "role" of mother. Serendipitously, Wash is chosen by the younger brother of the plantation owner, to serve as his scientific assistant. Under the watchful eye of Christopher "Titch" WIlde, the boy learns some reading and math skills, but especially hones his ability to draw natural objects. After the two prepare for a trip aloft in a hot-air balloon, the novel begins to unravel..The reader is forced to suspend all credibility from that point onward. Titch and Wash are saved in a storm from the sinking "Cloud-cutter", sail up the coast of the United States and elude a bounty hunter by escaping to the Arctic. Wash wends his way alone to Nova Scotia only to meet up with a marine biologist and his daughter. There is more travel on deck for Wash to Europe and even Morocco. There are too many characters and dead-end story meanderings in too many venues. It absolutely dispels the major themes of the effects of slavery and the need to belong to a family. Sadly, a great start has a very unsatisfying finish.

Washington Black is an unusual hybrid of a book – an adventure-fraught, adrenaline-pumping tale that also incorporates the horrors of slavery, the joys of scientific discovery, and a coming of age journey. Yet, it all works.Briefly, a look at the plot: a 12-year-old slave named George Washington Black (nicknamed Wash) , by a streak of fortune, falls under the protection of the cruel owner’s brother, Christopher (Titch) Wilde, who is far more enlightened with a scientific bend. After a nail-biting plot twist, the two end up in the heart of the frozen Arctic and eventually, Wash’s travels take him to places near and far. There are surprises along the way and characters that we thought we had seen the last of who pop up in unexpected places. To say much more, I think, would constitute a spoiler (and there are spoilers galore on this book out there.)If the book has a theme and a motto, it would be the words of Titch to Wash, who early on reveals himself to be a meticulous artist: “Be faithful to what you see, and not what you are supposed to see.”quintessential question becomes: who is Wash, anyway? Someone to be exploited? Someone to be saved? Or perhaps someone who is in a constant journey of self-discovery, recognizing, ultimately, that “life had never belonged to any of us…we had been estranged from the potential of our own bodies, from the revelation of everything our bodies and minds could accomplish.” Therein lies the tragedy—and the majesty—of Esi Edugyan’s soaring book.

George Washington Black, Wash, for short, is an unlikely world traveler, inquisitive observer of nature, and gifted artist because of his beginnings as a slave on a sugar cane plantation. However, an encounter with Titch, fellow scientist and traveler, changes the direction of Wash’s fate. A compelling narrative, Washington Black is the kind of novel that makes me want to go back and reread it as soon as I finished. Themes of pain and suffering we both experience and inflict resound through the story. Often bitter and horrific, the story nonetheless is hopeful and even darkly comic at times. This is a truly unique read.

This was an interesting and somewhat unconventional take on the effects of slavery on slave and master. For me, the protagonist's extended obsession with his one-time master's motives that drives the last part of the book rang a bit hollow -- without denying the character his intelligence and emotional complexity, it seemed like the kind of brooding and psychologizing that belongs to a more modern era. However, the characters and their world are fascinating and well-drawn, and I found the book very entertaining. My only other complaint, as a hot-air and gas balloonist, is that the ballooning described in this book is completely unrealistic. It cast doubt on all the other historical content of the book.

After considerable discussion earlier about the lifting power of hydrogen for the Cloud-cutter, the first ascent of the balloon is accomplished by hot air. On p 104 we have: "Then, without another word, he [Titch]adjusted the canister. A higher column of fire surged upwards into the canopy, and the fabric began to shudder and shake."I imagine it would have done, if the hydrogen-filled Hindenberg is anything to go by. Are there no copy editors in today's world?

Washington Black is a remarkable novel beginning on an early 19th century plantation, where a British heir mentors a slave boy in scientific experiments,; quickly realizing that his assistant has astonishing artistic talent. The book takes readers from the warmth of the Caribbean to the glaciers of the Arctic, and is a beautifully written and radical change from this decade's literary dystopia.

This book is EVERYTHING!! It is Jules Verne, Mark Twain and Toni Morrison entwined. The exploits of young Wash to find his roots, someone to love him is breathtakingly beautiful. There were times after reading a passage I'd have to pause and digest it. I recommend this book as REQUIRED READING! Run to your bookstores, libraries or Kindles. Get it!
