Review

A remarkable book. Cary Carson and his colleagues have transformed the way architectural history fieldwork is performed and in the process have also changed our understanding of the early architecture of the Chesapeake.--Carter L. Hudgins, Clemson UniversityThe Chesapeake House is the fruit of a generation's labors and captures a revolution in the study of early American architecture. The authors adroitly combine field documentation with the most recent research as they explore the region's architecture--from the smallest details of construction and decoration to the broadest issues of social ritual and social prestige. This is the great work we have been waiting for.--Dell Upton, University of California, Los Angeles

With others I agree the Kindle edition does this otherwise fine book a disservice. Too many illustrations from the printed edition are absent in the Kindle edition, replaced with "Illustration deleted. To view this illustration, please refer to the print edition of this book."I fault Amazon for two reasons: (1) omitting the illustrations, and (2) failing to alert prospective buyers of their omission. I consider the second fault worse than the first. If I were able to ask for a refund I would.

As someone who is intoxicated with 18th century southern and tidewater architecture and building practices, I can't praise this highly enough. Most "old house" (to use a slang term) books focus on exteriors - surfaces - decor, with occasionally a cross section of a door jamb or window sash thrown in. Much good work has of course been done on classical design, the orders, and how this has come down to us as the common interior and exterior mouldings seen in the "polite house" of this period. But as far as a real anatomical dissection, down to the gristle, of the building practices of the men who built these houses, you had to go begging with your hat in your hand. There are scraps here and there, as much as the intended readership would bear but no more, in books by housewright and woodworker Roy Underhill and timber framer Jack Sobon; "Get Your House Right" is the best there is on architecture and tasteful design of these houses without going into construction details, and the White Pine Series can be assembled if you want to put on your 5 power magnification goggles and squint at the beautiful tiny scale architectural drawings. So much emphasis has been placed on New England one would think there were no great houses anywhere else. (Yankees!) But here in massive, heavy glory is almost anything one could hope to know about the domestic buildings that we commonly associate with Colonial Williamsburg but in fact typified an entire culture, not just the miracle mile there in "the 'burg".Indepth work on not only the what and the how but also the WHY is what sets this apart. They don't just show one cross section of sash muntin to show that in the 18th century they were thicker and deeper than in the 19th, the authors give us cross sections of 10 or more muntins, from different houses and different periods. I've never seen so many bannisters before. Paint in all its shades and meanings. How they put the brass rim locks in a house so that you would see them as you moved through it. Also how people lived in the houses - the way they laid out their posessions - the rhythm of their lives.Worth twice the price. "Grab it and growl", as we say. It'll probably go out of print and the price will achieve fair market value.

Imagine, for a minute, in your mind's eye, a house that comes to mind when someone shifts your attention to Annapolis or Williamsburg. If you're like me, you'll think of William Paca's grand Annapolis townhouse, or perhaps George Wythe's equally grand Williamsburg townhouse. Or perhaps you'll be reminded of Shirley Plantation or more modest but equally beautiful Smith's Fort.If this sounds like you, you have a fondness for houses of the Chesapeake region, a vast area with a wealth of historic architecture tied together by a common historic, economic and cultural identity. This book is dedicated to capturing the building art of the region. By using the term "art," I mean exactly that. The book is not an architectural catalog, but is a descriptive guide to the arts and crafts employed by architects and artisans in the design and construction of these magnificent and beautiful structures. The houses featured herein were designed and built when a house served a profoundly different function than it does today. They were not only places of domicile, but also expression of a common culture and agricultural ideal. These houses, regardless of size or age, were meant to make a statement. They were also meant to make money, from the cash crops of the day. These very characteristics allow the authors to group what may otherwise be considered different styles into a common whole - the Chesapeake House. The houses featured in the book were all built before 1850 because the authors note that regional distinction in style had essentially disappeared by then. Houses built in the 1850s in Virginia looked a lot like houses built in the 1850s in Wisconsin, or California, etc...So here we have a book divided into chapters, roughly, by cultural theme (in the first half of the book) and trade (in the second half). The Design Process, Plantation Housing, Outbuildings, Woodwork, windows, doors, hardware, paint, etc... Each chapter is written by the outstanding practicing expert in his or her respective field. The book, while beautifully illustrated, is intended to be a research tool and a serious work of scholarship. It's intended to inform further architectural investigation and history into the styles we associate with the Chesapeake. As such, it's a pleasure to read for what it reveals about historical form, and it's informative in what it can offer as a manual for accurate reproduction of that historical form. Here's a book that reveals all the secrets as to why so few people can actually tell the original buildings in Williamsburg from the reconstructions, and why it's important to reconstruct certain structures to begin with. The illustrations are outstanding. As the book is a study of style and its cultural contexts, the photographs and illustrations support that specific purpose. While it's often beautiful, this book should not be mistaken for a volume of artistic color photographs. The graphics, cutaways, elevations, floorplans, details, etc... are numerous and superb. If you have an interest in this style, or you are a practicing architect or craftsman working in this style, this book is a must. If your interests are more casual (i.e. less technical), this book will still keep your interest. Just be aware that the text may be difficult at times. This book will quickly become the standard of its type. The editor, Carl Lounsbury, is the absolute authority in this subject of architectural history. You're not going to find a better book.

Fabulous book. It delighted the person I gifted it too!

Really good text, but would have like to see more pictures.

The study team (and their predecessors) who have extracted so much out of construction in the Chesapeak have put their knowledge in a handsome book. People working in this field can use this book to confirm so much of what they see in an old house. And just when they feel really smug about the restoration they are doing, they will come upon impossible surprises that will remind them that the more this subject is studied, the greater our ignorance is revealed to be. Excellent reproduction of many valuable photographs.

I've been a Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) fan for many years. While I'm rather partial to a certain young Earl, I find all the characters quite intriguing and fascinating, so it's natural that I would enjoy this collection of art featuring Ciel, Sebastian, and the rest of the gang, all illustrated by the original artist, Yana Toboso. Also included are some illustrations of her first work (which nobody even remembers, sadly) called Rust Blaster, as well as a few other pieces. The volume, which is much too short for my preferences, features glossy, full-color pages filled with spreads and covers of primarily Bocchan, Sebaschan, though several also feature Grell and the other minor characters. At the end of the book, Toboso-sensei includes a small commentary on each of the pieces. The hardbound book includes two small bookmarks, one attached to each cover, as well. In traditional Japanese style, the book reads from right to left, though it doesn't much matter as the contents are entirely visual.Any fan of the series, and especially those who have a love for Sebastian and Ciel, really owe it to themselves to pick up this volume. I believe in supporting the artists and authors whose works I find enjoyable, and your purchase of this work also helps to do that. This is a beautiful book that will be a part of my collection for many years to come, and I'm certainly hoping for a second volume (and a third, and....)!

The book was well protected and is absolutely beautiful. From the cover to the pictures inside, it is so gorgeous to look through. It's well put together and I've had no issues with loose pages or any pieces falling out of it. It has made a great addition to my Black Butler collection. Definitely a great buy. Can't wait to get the second book.

I mean, what else can I say but if you love Black Butler and Yana Toboso's artwork, you need to get this! It's beautifully done, the artwork is vibrant and the pages are high quality as well. It was also packaged quite well and does not have any wear or tear from the delivery. If you are unable to get this at a book store, get it here!

Just received it a few minutes before! So incredibly happy! The book came in a flat carton brown box with a thin plastic wrapper.I bough it used and it came like new! The pictures are gorgeous!

One of my favorite!!!!!!!!!

I ordered this for my daughter who is a huge Black Butler fan. She was delighted. The set work is stunning. She couldn't love it more.

Yana's artwork is truly my favorite, and the design of the book is beautiful.

This artbook albeit dated is a wonderful addition to anyone's collection. The artwork is crisp and it is a treat to look through Yana's older work. If you love Black Butler do not hesitate to pick this up!

Roadside Geology of Minnesota, by Richard W. Ojakangas

From the Inside Flap

You may have heard that Minnesota's ten thousand lakes are the hoofprints of Paul Bunyan's big blue ox, Babe. "Don't you believe it!" writes author Dick Ojakangas. Though the lakes, which formed at the end of the most recent ice age, may be Minnesota's most famous features, the glaciated countryside disguises a much longer history of volcanoes and plate collisions--not surprising when you learn that Minnesota was at the active edge of the fledgling North American continent for several billion years. "Roadside Geology of Minnesota" steers you over glacial moraines and till plains to some of the state's unparalleled geologic features, such as the Morton Gneiss, once thought to be the oldest rock on Earth; the St. Peter Sandstone, one of the purest sandstones in the world; the banded iron-formation, the source of iron for the Great Lakes steel industry; and the ancient shorelines of Glacial Lake Agassiz, one of the largest glacial lakes ever to have existed in North America. The book's introduction presents an overview of Minnesota's geologic history, and forty-two road guides discuss the landforms and rocks visible from a car window and at nearby waysides and parks, including Pipestone National Monument, and Voyageurs National Park.

Richard Ojakangas is a native Minnesotan whose life has been spent in learning about and teaching Minnesota's geological history. He taught at the U of M in Duluth for over 30 years, and is the author of Minnesota's Geology, which is probably the definitive geology book on the North Star State. That book, however, is not quite meant for the casual reader (although its less imposing than many other books of the type). Minnesota has lacked a Roadside Geology style book for too long. After years without one, Ojakangas has finally written a book for the non-scientist, the latest in the Roadside Geology series, the Roadside Geology of Minnesota. It's been worth the wait. After an introduction to the geological history of Minnesota (as you might expect, the Pleistocene, with its glaciations, gets a lot of space) as well as some basic geology to get those who avoided the rock science in high school or college, the book divides into several sections based on Geography. (Northeastern, Northwestern/Central, Southwestern, Southeastern)In each section, Ojakangas gives a general overview of the Geology of that area followed by the meat of the book, Road Guides. There are plenty of photographs, maps and diagrams to elucidate the text and keep travelers oriented as they visit the various highlighted sites. I learned about plenty of sites that were just off of my route in previous travels that I will definitely visit with book in tow. I had no idea, for instance, of a beautiful beach of rhyolite pebbles lies just 3 miles north of Gooseberry Falls. I'd never heard of Chimney Rock, a spire of sandstone a few miles off of US 61 on the way south from St. Paul. In addition, I have an appreciation for places and locales I have seen, now having a better geological context for them. The composition and nature of Barn Bluff in Red Wing, for instance. I had no idea there's a fault that has shifted the layers on one side of it!Armchair amateur geologists who buy the Roadside series of volumes will not want to miss this latest volume.I most especially recommend this book, though, for any and all Minnesota travelers interested in the physical geology of the state to buy the book, read it, and then take it with you on your next road trip to, say, Gooseberry Falls, or Winona, or the Boundary Waters, or Pipestone. I certainly will!

One of the newest of this very informative series, perhaps the most qulaified person to undertake this project was chosen. Dr. Ojakangas has done a great job of reaching the nonprofessional curious. Although most of the surface geology of this sizable state is dominated by glacial deposits, Dr. Ojakangas often goes beyond the surface to dicsuss the apparent geological history in that region and to provide examples of underlying rock outcrops. Profusely illustrated with mostly color photos, diagrams and maps, it is well organized according to 4 rather distinct geological regions. About half the book is devoted to the most interesting and economically important region: the northeast, which Dr. Ojakangas is also most familiar with. Find out why Sioux Quartzite and St.Peter Sandstone, both composed of nearly pure well-rounded quartz sand grains, have such different erosional resistances and commercial uses.

I have been fortunate to have participated in a Field Trip lead by Dr. Ojakangas, and just like his lectures and field trips, he sprinkles this book with humorous anecdotes, bits of Indian Folklore, obscure facts about Minnesota's history, and of course, a lot of geology. If you enjoyed and learned a lot from Dr. Ojakangas's book "Minnesota's Geology" coauthored with Charles L. Matsch in 1982, you will be delighted with "Roadside Geology of Minnesota".The book's introduction begins with an extensive overview of Minnesota's geology. A discussion of plate tectonics with illustrative diagrams and maps, sets the stage for a review of the Midcontinent Rift System, which is responsible for the volcanic rock found along Lake Superior's shore. Beginning with Archean Time 4.5 billion years ago, down through the Proterozoic, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, Tertiary, through the glacial periods of the Pleistocene, Minnesota has geological evidence of it all (except for what the glaciers may have removed or redistributed.)Following the primer on basic geology, the book is divided into four sections, based upon the regions of the State: Northeastern, Northwestern and Central, Southwestern, and Southeastern. If you know anything at all about the geology of Minnesota, you will not be surprised to find that the section on the Northeast is the longest, and the most interesting, geologically. The Northeastern section is home to the mines of the Mesabi, Biwabik and Cuyuna iron ranges, Lake Superior's scenic Highway 61, amazing road cuts, the Sudan Underground Mine State Park, classic examples of greywacke, agates, and Warba -- the home town of Dick Ojakangas. And if you thought that "Cuyuna" was an Indian word, you will be surprised to find out where it really came from when you read the book. The Road Guides in each section give detailed descriptions of the geology to be found, what caused it, and the mile marker numbers that correspond with interesting stops. From the Pipestone and Sioux Quartzite of southwestern Minnesota to the pillow basalt in Ely, from the karst country of southeastern Minnesota to the ancient Lake Agassiz shorelines in the northwest, and all the glacial lakes, till, drumlins, eskers, kames and kettles in between, Dick Ojakangas includes it all. There are many color photographs of geologic features throughout the book, many of which I recognized from field trips past. This book is great for armchair geologists. If you don't want to follow the road guides and explore further, you should still read the book. After you read it, keep it in your car, for you never know when you might be on the road and come across an interesting geological feature that piques your curiosity. Having a geologist in the car while traveling in Minnesota is something I've often wished for. Traveling with the "Roadside Geology of Minnesota" goes a long way to fill that void.

The first 40 pages give a 3.8 billion year history of the Geology of Minnesota and lay the background for the rest of the book. The rest of the book is divided into 4 geographical sections of Minnesota, common roads and the interesting things to see from a geological standpoint.I like the way the author writes, not too dry but informative. Amateurs may be doing some additional research on the geological terms and definitions used in the book but it is not over your head. This is a must have for the Amateur geologist and even some of the pros. I am a Minnesota Master Naturalist and will be using it for my own enjoyment and for tours and students.
